Yankees Continue to Keep Their Fans Disinterested

The Good

Since our last post, that Yankees have managed to drop two consecutive series, first to the Rangers and now to Baltimore. This has helped their fan base completely disengage, a process that began when our opening day roster consisted of Robinson Cano and a series of strangers we'd never seen or heard of before. The Yankees understand that they have a passionate fan base. Too passionate. Their continued effort to help us disengage is for our own emotional health and well-being; and it's working. I took a walk yesterday. On purpose.

The Bad

Chris Davis has 30 home runs as of June 29th. That's bad. Not in a negative way, but in a good way. Like when we say Nasty Nas, it's not because Nas is offensive to the palate but because he's really good at rapping. Bad in that way.

The Ugly

Phelps gave up 9 earned runs in 2.1 innings. Phelps gave them up, like he got mugged for runs and he wasn't trying to fight back but just gave 'em up. That's ugly. The Baltimore Police Department was notified of the robbery and is investigating.

Since Our Last Post . . .

. . . We've hit 6 home runs. I'll let my brother update the totals because it's time for my walk.

RJG Speaks to Brian Cashman, Attempts to Calm Him Down

As it has been some time since we've spoken, it could only be assumed on our part that Brian Cashman's recent outbursts were a function of missing us. We fired up the old satellite phone (the phone is new, but the satellite is uses is kind of old), and called everybody's favorite maritime sailor/GM to find out what was going on. The following is a transcript of our conversation:

BC: Hello?

RJG: Hey Bronny! What the #@*% is wrong with you?

BC: Why don't you shut the #@*% up?

RJG: I would, but I need to find out why you're so #@*%ed up first.

BC: I'm not sure what you're #@*%ing referring to.

RJG: Your inexplicable #@*%ing need to say #@*% all the time.

BC: I don't say #@*% all the time.

RJG: You've said #@*% at least eight $@*%ing times since you answered the phone.

BC: Get the #@*% outta here.

RJG: I'm #@*%ing serious. Is it A-Rod? #@*% him.

BC: I don't think so. But yeah, #@*% him.

RJG: Maybe you're surrounding yourself with too many #@*%ing people who say #@*% a lot.

BC: I can't think of anyone I #@*%ing know who would fit that description.

RJG: You do live in New York #@*%ing city. People say #@*% a lot there.

BC: Really? I never #@*%ing noticed that.

RJG: Me neither. But these #@*%ing out-of-towners swear we New Yorkers say #@*% all the time!

BC: Nobody #@*%ing talks like that here.

RJG: Preaching to the #@*%ing choir, brother.

BC: I guess it's a #@*%ing mystery then.

RJG: Guess #@*%ing so.

BC: Bye.

RJG: Bye

Well, there you have it folks. There is no reasonable explanation for Bronny Cash's recent use of profanity before the press. It's probably stress or something.

Does Our Future Look Bright?

The Good

The Yankees took 2 of 3 over the weekend to split the series with the Rays.  In that time, some amazing things happened.  Namely, Zoilo Almonte demonstrated that he could hit.  Now David Adams started off strong and then tapered off, so it's still too early to get excited, but Almonte hit 6-10 over the weekend, with a homerun, two doubles, and 4 RBI's.  It's refreshing to see someone hitting like they want to stay on the team.  Also good, Vernon Wells hit a clutch pinch hit double to drive in 3 runs and put the Yankees ahead in the 7th inning of Saturday's game.  Maybe that'll get him hitting again.

Nova made a solid start on Sunday going 6.2 innings of 3 run ball, but the offense didn't back him up.

The Bad

Sabathia took a win on Saturday despite giving up 5 runs over 7 innings.  I know he gets better as the weather warms up, but how long does he need to thaw?

The Ugly

I love Cano, but how is he hitting .276?  Has anyone reminded him that he's in a walk year?

Boom!

That's the sound of Almonte's bat earning $2 for the kids.  At this stage, one homerun in a weekend is about what we can hope for.

Sigh

The Good

Zoilo Almonte got his first big league hit!

The Bad

I'd love to say that the Yankees aren't performing up to their potential, only that they are performing up to their potential.  We built a weak team, and weak teams get exposed throughout the course of 162 games. Wells, Hafner, and Overbay carried us early on, but eventually their numbers don't lie.  Wells has been hasn't hit over .230 since leaving Toronto, Hafner is good for some power, but is going to get his share of outs, and Overbay is clutch but has hit under .250 on average over the last 3 years.  We couldn't expect these guys to carry the weight of losing Granderson, and Teixeira, and having Cano slump throughout the first half of the year.

The Ugly

It's tough seeing Andy struggle.  He's a guy who battles, and always seems to grit out a good start, but recently he's been getting hit hard.  I wonder if age and a barking back may have finally caught up to him.

Sigh

Nothing in the homerun department means nothing in the bank for the Children's Health Fund.

Yankees Split Double Header

The Good

Kuroda and Ichiro were a powerful team in the first game of the series.  Kuroda gave 6.2 innings of 2 run ball, while Ichiro went 3-4 with a homerun, and drove in 3 runs.  If that wasn't enough, Lyle Overbay hit a 2-run double as well.  The Yankees took the first game like taking candy from a baby.  A drunk baby.

The Bad

The drunk baby was an angry drunk in game 2!  To understand the full failure of the Yankee loss in game 2, you have to understand the meaning of futility.  Futile is the only way to describe the Yankee offense in game 2.  The Yankee offense combined for 3 hits.  That's it.  No walks even.  Just 3 singles, that amounted to nothing.  And this exemplifies the glaring weakness in this Yankee offense.  Against certain pitching the bats don't go cold, they go dead.

The Ugly

Phil Hughes went 6 innings and gave up 5 runs.  His ERA now sits at 5.09, and the best way to describe him is inconsistent.  I have to think the Yankees will let Hughes walk after the season.  I'm led to believe that one of Warren, Phelps, Nuno and even Nova can give us better production while not costing free agent money.

Were Babies Helped?

Barely.  Ichiro's homerun ensured the babies wouldn't go home empty handed, but the babies still long for the days when the name Bronx Bombers wasn't ironic.

Yankees Leave With a Win

The Good

Sunday was a tense victory for the Yankees, but was nonetheless a win.   Sabathia looked good giving 8 innings of 2-run ball.  Hafner hit a 3-run homerun, and Jayson Nix went 3-4 with a run batted in.  The offense came alive just enough to pad the lead out of reach for the Angels.

The tensest moment came when Albert Pujols came up to bat against Mariano Rivera in the 9th.  Bases loaded 2-outs, a hit would win the game for the Angels, and an out would secure the game for the Yankees.  The greatest hitter of our generation against the greatest closer of our generation.  As the Joker would say, an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.  However, an immovable object can strike out, as it did on 3 unstoppable pitches from Mariano Rivera.

The Bad

Mark Teixeira came out of the game on Saturday because his wrist was inflammed.  It apparently hasn't been right since he's been back, but he's been battling through it.  It certainly explains his .151 average.

The Ugly

Unable to win on hits, the Yankees turned to their legs on Saturday.  The Yankees stole 4 bases on Saturday, and it almost worked.  Ichiro had stolen second, and then stole third with no outs.  A hit, a sac fly, a ground ball, a well placed bunt would have brought him home.  However, the next 3 batters Thomas Neal, Reid Brignac, and Chris Stewart all struck out.  Failing to bring someone home from third with no outs is unforgivable.  Even for this offense.

Another Weekend Another Dollar

Well, two dollars to be exact.  The Yankees managed to hit one homerun over the weekend.

Wow That Was Bad

The Good

The pitching was phenomenal yesterday.  Hiroki Kuroda pitched 8 innings allowing just 2 runs, Adam Warren pitched 6 innings of shutout ball, and 4 relievers got us through 3 scoreless innings before one of them finally gave up a run.

Also good, Cano started to wake up a bit going 3-6 with a homerun, outshining Ichiro's 3-7 performance.

The Bad

3 runs across 18 innings is what Yankee pitching gave up, which in normal circumstances would be enough to win you 3 games.  For the Yankees, this all amounted to one ugly loss.

The Ugly

The offense was awful.  Kuroda pitches 8 innings allowing 2 runs, and you can't win the game?  18 innings with one missed opportunity after another until finally, the Athletics snuck a couple singles through and scored the game winning run off of Mariano Rivera.  It should have never came to this.  Hafner went 0-8, Wells went 0-8, and Youkilis went 0-7.  These are supposed to be run producers for us.  Even Teixeira went 0-5 though he gets a pass after single handedly breaking us out of a losing streak last week.  The Yankees are now in need of another power surge to break out of their malaise.  They were oddly reminiscent of last year's Yankees with their inability to hit with runners on base, only they don't have the homerun power of last year's Yankees.  It's painful to watch.

At Least the Homer Drought Ended

Cano hit a homerun, breaking the homerless drought for the kids at the Children's Health Fund.

More Famine Than Feast

The Good

Ichiro had a couple hits!  Totally awesome!

The Bad

Phil Hughes had another one of those starts that makes you wonder if he has a Jekyll and Hyde complex.  He's eerily similar to AJ Burnett: a fastball/curveball pitcher with not a ton of control of where the pitch ends up.  It's just a matter of what year of AJ Burnett he's pitching like, and last night, it was closer to the 2010 version.  His 4.1 innings and 3 runs was not enough to get the Yankees in position for the win.

The Ugly

Ichiro's 2 hits made up half the Yankee offense last night.  We have 6 regular contributors batting at or under .250, and Mark Teixeira is the only one hitting the long ball.  6 players hitting under .250 and only 1 of them hitting homeruns?  The Yankees have officially devolved into the Kansas City Royals.

Robitussin About to be More Watery

The Yankee homerun drought has left the kids at the Children's Health Fund with little medicine.  Maybe Clemens can donate some of his Vitamin B12 shots that helped him pitch well past retirement.

Yankees Hit More Singles, But Athletics Hit More Homeruns

The Good

The Yankees were making good contact and getting on base.  Four Yankees had multi-hit games including Teixeira who drove in 3 runs.  Preston Claiborne continues to put up 0's as a middle reliever.  He's given up 1 run in 14 outings this year.  He's like the Mariano Rivera of the 6th inning.

The Bad

The Yankees had bases loaded with 1 out in the first, and both Kevin Youkilis and Lyle Overbay flew out to end the threat.  Against older pitchers, you have to strike in the first inning lest they warm up to their younger selves in later innings.

The Ugly

CC Sabathia had another head-scratching start.  He's either lights out, or gets lit up these days, and it's kind of tiring.  6 innings and 6 runs is not the kind of outing we want out of this guy.

The Meds

Little Jimmy's going to have to throw some water in the Robitussin to make it last a little longer, because the next bottle is going to have to wait.  No Yankees were able to clear the outfield wall.  Hafner came close, but even his titan-like strength fell short to the onslaught of atmospheric pressure.

Yankees Take The Weekend

The Good

Our pitching.  Andy Pettitte rolled up into Seattle and pitched like a boss.  7.1 innings, 1 run, and nothing but despair in the hearts of the Mariners lineup.  David Phelps threw 6 innings of 1 run ball last night proving to himself and others that he can indeed take Hughes spot when he leaves at the end of the year.

Also good, Brett Gardner.  Gardner had 8 hits in 13 at bats over the weekend including 4 doubles and stole a base.  Chris Stewart was the hero of the weekend however with a ninth inning go-ahead single last night.  Although Lyle Overbay was on the bench, Girardi stuck with Stewart because of his belief that catchers are superior to humans in general.

The Bad

Kuroda gave up 4 runs in the Friday game, leading us to a loss against Bonderman.  This is the same Bonderman that gave up 7 runs in his last outing.  Come on Kuroda!

The Ugly

Wells and Youkilis.  I know that Wells was raking early on in the season, and Youkilis has moments where he really squares up the ball well, but right now they are both awful.  Through this weekend, Wells is hitting .238 and Youkilis is at .239.  Wells' magic seems to have worn off, but at least he's been healthy, unlike Youkilis.  It might still be too early to judge, but at some point the Youkilis deal may have to go down as a bust.  For our sake, I'm hoping Youkilis heats up with the summer, and Wells gets that pixy dust going again.

Wins Save Babies?

No.  Homeruns do, and the Yankees hit none all weekend.  That's $0 for the babies.

Yankees Continue Pouncing On Inferior Teams

The Good

Phil Hughes looked good in last nights start, going 7 innings with 1 unearned run.  And when I say it was unearned, it's because the umpires gave the Mariners a mercy run referring to Bud Selig's competitive balance rule that dictates all teams playing under .500 be given a one run head start.  Cano and Teixeira went yard.  That is the 3rd homerun for Teixeira in 4 games.  Teixeira is clearly trying to make up for lost time.

The Bad

The draft happened yesterday, and the Yankees picked up a number of promising prospects.  Why is this bad?  Because if the last decade of drafts tells us anything, these prospects will be hyped up, only to never succeed on the big stage, or to get traded.  I've been through it too many times, and all I can say about the hype is this: I'll believe it when I see it (Brackman, Betances, Banuelos, CJ Henry, Alan Horne, Bronson Sardinha, Jeffrey Marquez etc.).

The Ugly

It can be frustrating watching the Yankees beat up on Cleveland an Seattle, shortly after dropping big series against our rival Red Sox and Mets.  The Yankees sure do pick strange times to step up.

Yankees Sweep Cleveland

The Good

CC Sabathia gave us a complete game effort with 9 strikeouts and 4 runs as the Yankees went on to sweep Cleveland.  The Yankees desperately needed to bounce back against Cleveland after getting swept by the Mets and losing a series to the Red Sox.  If we don't beat up on the weaker teams, we'll have no chance of lasting long enough to get bounced out of the first round of playoffs by one of the stronger teams.  Hafner and Gardner both hit homeruns, and it's always nice to see a little pop.

The Bad

CC Sabathia's complete game didn't allow us to see what we really want: Mariano Rivera save games in his retirement year.  When will Sabathia stop being so selfish?

The Ugly

The ugliest thing is that despite the recent news of Anthony Bosch's willingness to aid MLB in their ongoing investigation, if history reflects what will happen, it'll likely amount to nothing.  They couldn't nail Clemens even with Brian McNamee providing needles with traces of Clemen's blood that he used to inject him with illegal substances.  Braun escaped a failed drug test because a guy missed the Fedex pick up time.  Even Bond's got off, and that was one of the most high profile cases relating to PED use in professional sports.

Long story shot, don't be surprised if this whole debacle ends with no suspension for A-Rod, but enough evidence for the 29 other teams to never even think about taking him off your hands.

Teixeira Making Up for Lost Time

The Good

For the second game in a row, Mark Teixeira has provided the power.  Mark's 3-run homerun gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead that they would not give back.  This is after hitting a grandslam to put the Yankees ahead in the previous game.  David Phelps was powerfully stingy.  After being unable to pitch out of the first inning in his last outing, Phelps threw 6 shutout innings, striking out 7 in the process.

The Bad

It's tough watching David Adams go through a bit of a slump.  I'm really pulling for him to make it on the big league level, which is hard to do when you're hitting .231.

The Ugly

A-Rod's back in the spotlight as it was reported that MLB is seeking a 100-game suspension for him, for allegedly purchasing PED's from the now defunct Biogenesis clinic.  The 100-game suspension would cost him $15.3 million of his annual salary for 2013.  Anthony Bosch who ran the clinic is apparently ready to rat out a number of clients including some whose names have not appeared in his famed notebooks.  As my brother put it, drug dealers make the worst friends!

Not Bad

The Good

The offense showed signs of life yesterday!  Teixeira hit a grand slam, giving the Yankees an early lead, and then hits by Hafner and Gardner got us ahead of the Indians after they caught up to us.  We scored 7 runs in total, which is more than we scored all weekend against the Red Sox.

Also good, we haven't gotten rid of Overbay.  Overbay played right field yesterday and did a decent job of it.  As one of the few players that hits when you need him to, and otherwise is one of the few players that puts together good at bats in this lineup, it would have been awful to let him go.  Smart move by the Yankees to find a new position for him.

The Bad

Pettitte's first start back from the DL wasn't great.  He allowed 4 runs across 4.2 innings and struggled mightily in the 5th inning.  Our bullpen pitched well, and managed to keep Cleveland from scoring anymore runs, but it was a rough outing for our stopper.

The Ugly

Before Teixeira hit the grandslam, Cano came up to bat, and promptly grounded out on the first pitch.  This is something that has always frustrated me about Cano.  Swinging on the first pitch works out well only if you get a hit, otherwise it looks like you're impatient, and when your offense has struggled as it has and you have an opportunity to break the game open you don't want to be giving up foolish outs.  Bases loaded 0 outs, is much different than bases loaded 1 out.  A double play ends a bases loaded threat with 1 out.  It all worked out in the end with Teixeira hitting the homerun, but take a pitch Cano!

At Least the Children Don't Need to Continue to Suffer

The Yankees extra base slump finally broke with the Yankees hitting 3 extra base hits, including 2 homeruns.  That's $4 more for the kids.

Oh Offense Where Art Thou?

The Good

We took the first game against the Red Sox and Sabathia was outstanding.  7.1 innings, 10 strikeouts, at least 3 Red Sox players left in tears.  It was a great start.

The Bad

Hughes' start on Saturday was not what you would hope.  When he left in the 5th inning, he had allowed 5 runs.  Adam Warren came in later in the game and gave up 6 runs across 3 innings.  The Yankees took an 11-1 loss, and that leads us to the ugly...

The Ugly

The offense.  Surely the Yankee offense would rebound with Teixeira and Youkilis back in the lineup, right?  Well the offense continued to flop, struggling to make solid contact, and hit anything that wasn't a single.  The Yankees had one extra base hit all weekend.  A double.  It was like the Yankees had lost the will to hit.  We ended the series taking a 3-0, 6 inning loss, and all I can say is that I think the rain saved us from another otherwise embarrassing blowout.  Through 5 innings yesterday, the Yankees mustered 2 hits, neither of them for extra bases, and 1 walk.

Sad Day for Humanity

Across an entire weekend, the Yankees did not hit a single homerun.  That means that no child was benefited by the selfish Yankees.
