Around the Majors

The Phillies finally stood up to the Nationals yesterday winning an extra innings affair 8-7. The final run scored on a heroic walk-off walk with the bases loaded by Jayson Werth.

The Kansas City Royals finished a sweep of the GREATEST OFFENSE IN ALL THE HISTORY OF OFFENSES Detroit Tigers. Zach Grienke gave up one run on a homer to Brandon Inge over 7 innings. Where the crap did this team come from? We wrote a while back that Kansas City was building in the right direction, and that they would compete in the near future, but they're really outperforming themselves. I expect they won't continue this for long, but keep watch of this team. They have some quality rookies making names for themselves, and Dayton Moore is no dummy.

Besides the Yankees winning, nothing else happened in baseball yesterday.

We Can Thank Cashman For This

The Yankees took the first series of the season, and we can definitely thank Cashman for this. It was Melky who won the first game and Hughes who kept us in the third. Both of those players were offered as trade bait for Santana. Now, if we had Santana there's a good chance we win the game he pitches in this series since, after all, he's Johan Santana. But Cashman made the right move by sticking with youth and not letting Bill Smith try to strip him of a bunch of prospects. Maybe Hughes and Melky don't pan out, there are no guarantees. But Cashman sent a message about our commitment to youth and that is important, especially to those young players.

On another note, the offense needs to pick it up. But I won't complain, we won the series and that's not a bad way to start the season.

Further, there is now one more reason to hate Fenway Park. In addition to being Fenway Park, the grounds crew has trained a hawk to attack Latino children. Especially if they have a name almost identical to a ball-player on the Yankees.

Game 3 Yankee Win

The Good

The Yankees manufactured a run the old fashion way! After Melky got on base, Damon bunted his way on, and Jeter bunted them into scoring position. Abreu's bloop single scored Melky from there and put the Yankees ahead 3-2. Speaking of Abreu, he's been off to a hot start getting a couple hits yesterday. Hughes tossed 6 innings of 2 run ball with 4 strikeouts. That'll win some games. Also, the Chamberlain-Rivera combo has worked for the second time in two tries. There is definitely some benefits to having Chamberlain in the bullpen. I just don't see Latroy or Kyle filling that role.

The Bad

Cano, A-rod....What the crap? Ewan McGregor made the Yankee lineup look silly until they finally scored their pair of runs. He was pitching with the flu!

The Ugly

Frank Thomas struck out looking on a full count by Phil Hughes. The pitch was definitely inside, but the umpire called it a strike. Frank Thomas flipped out and got tossed. I like Frank Thomas.

Respect Jeter's Gangster is for the Children

Respect Jeter's Gangster joined Johnny Damon's Homerun Club, and is giving $1.00 for every homerun the Yankees hit this season. The money goes to the Children's Health Fund. Throughout the season, we will keep a running tally of the homeruns and money donated. No homeruns today. The Yankees must really hate the children:

Melky Cabrera 1hr = $1.00
Alex Rodriguez 1hr = $1.00
Total = $2.00

Third Game of the Season

So I just checked the score and we're down again. Hughes has 2 runs through five innings, we better score. If he pitches well we need to get him a win, especially against Ewan McGregor or whoever the hell is pitching for Toronto. Obi-Won is not winning this game. Melky's up with Matsui on first, let's make something happen.

8:36 Update

DP, thanks Melky.

Theeeeeeeeeeeeee Yankees Lose

How come Sterling never says it like that? Well, as you all know by now, the Yankees lost, leaving the team with a .500 record. Cy Young Burnett pitched very well. Mussina? Not so much. Though in fairness to Moose he did not pitch poorly, and when the other pitcher is on like that you're going to lose some games. That and he had no pre-game candy. A Granola bar and trail mix? #$*%#$ Outta Here! I'm not sure how but I'm sure the guys over at a blog to remain nameless have found a way to blame Joe Torre for this. If they haven't, then keep reading, because I have. Over the last few seasons Torre relied so heavily on Mussina that he ruined his arm. He would leave Mussina in games too long, making him throw too many pitches, pitch him on back to back double header games, so on and so forth. Then, after games, Mussina would have to do the other players' homework. Now Moose is cooked. I hate you Joe Torre, I hate you!

Game 2 Loss to Blue Jays

The Good

A-Rod crushed a 2-run homerun with Abreu on base and Derek Jeter had a couple hits. Mussina put up a mediocre effort lasting 5.2 innings with 4 runs, 3 of them earned. Not the best outing but certainly good enough for a 4 or 5 starter. Ross Ohlendorf threw a perfect 9th inning, striking out 1. Farnsworth did not allow a run in his inning, but he did give up 2 hits.

The Bad

Burnett dominated the Yankee hitters, limiting them to the two runs from A-Rods homer. Latroy Hawkins also gave up a run in his debut.

The Ugly

The Yankees put two runners on with no outs in the 9th and A-Rod coming up to bat. A-Rod struck out swinging. Later, with one out remaining and runners on the corner, Cano popped up the first pitch. I thought we fixed that Cano. Take a pitch or two!

Around the Majors

The most devastating offense in the entire universe was shut down by the most dominating pitching staff in all the league*. Brian Bannister of the Kansas City Royals threw 7 shutout innings of 2 hit ball and struck out 4. Tigers Kenny Rogers pitched a good 6 innings of 2 run ball, but it wasn't enough. Good start for the Royals.

*The Independent League.

The Nationals no longer believe the Phillies are the team to beat after taking the second game from them. The 1 - 0 victory was punctuated by 7 innings of one hit, shutout ball by former Yankee Tim Redding, and a solo homerun by Ryan Zimmerman.

Mariners closer JJ Putz is going to the DL with costochondritis. Sounds dirty. Across town, Pedro Martinez blew a hammy. "A mystery is what it is." Says Mets new Director for Performance Enhancement, Marty Miller. Former Yankee third base coach Larry Bowa has already been suspended for 3 games for arguing with an umpire. The season just started. That has to be some sort of record.

Pre-Game Update

There hasn't been a new post since this morning, mainly on account of my not having posted anything, so here goes.

Should Hawkins be allowed to wear 21? Why not. I love Paul O'Neil but I'm not sure he should have his number retired, or the correct spelling of his last name for that matter. He was a gutsy player who gave it his all everyday, but had he played on the '88 to '94 Yankees with the same intensity we wouldn't be saying retire his number. And frankly, it's not the idea of retiring his number that bothers me, it's the idea that Hawkins can't wear it in the meantime. Grow up people, it's a jersey number. He's not walking around saying people should call him Mr. O'Neil. That would be weird.

Will Mussina pitch well tonight? It doesn't matter. It's his first game of 2008. Most pitchers are still building up arm strength. As long as he doesn't go Pedro on us and pull a hammie I really don't care how he pitches today. Come back in three weeks and we'll have that discussion.

Are the Yankees the best team in Baseball? Well, if you look at our winning percentage, then yes, we are.

7:25 Update

Way too many pitches in the first for mussina. I'm not worried about what it means for this season but if he doesn't settle down he won't be lasting very long in this game.

9:00 Update

That's why you don't put hitters on base for free. If he doesn't hit Frank Thomas a run doesn't score. Maybe he even goes 6 innings, 3 runs, the definition of a quality start. Not anymore (though one of his runs wasn't earned). Oh well. Mussina's pitched okay, not great, but getting the job done. If we could only score some runs against Cy Young Burnett maybe this would be a ballgame.

9:02 Update

The debut of Latroy Hawkins, this should be interesting.

9:03 Update

Greatest pitcher ever Latroy Hawkins ends the inning with one pitch. Not a bad debut I would say.

Opening Day Win for the Yankees

The Good

What a game. Wang pitched 7 innings of 2 run ball getting the win in the process. Chamberlain followed suit with a solid inning which ended with a strikeout of Frank Thomas, and Mariano closed the game in typical Mariano fashion. Melky Cabrera came up big in this game, hitting a homerun and making two spectacular plays in the field to rob some doubles. And we were going to trade this guy.

The Bad

The Yankees waisted a lead off triple by Johnny Damon in the 8th. Plain and simple, you need to score from third.

The Ugly

Roy Halladay was upset that Melky took the curtain call. He yelled at him to get back in the dugout. I personally believe he shouldn't cry in the baby milk. At first I thought Halladay was angry at Melky, but later I realized that he's probably just angry because he plays for the Blue Jays. When you're on the Rays or Orioles, you know your team sucks, and you can prepare for that. With the Blue Jays, they have enough talent to be a good team, but are perennial 3rd place holders in the AL East. Unfortunately for them, 3rd place is just out of reach of both a division title and a wild card spot. Its easy to prepare for a losing season, but a mediocre season, is tough to swallow. Its kind of like coffee, I can drink it hot, or I can drink it cold, but when its luke warm, I throw it out.

Respect Jeter's Gangster is for the Children

We at the Respect Jeter's Gangster blog understand the its all about the children. To this end, we joined Johnny Damon's Homerun Club to support the Children's Health Fund. The Children's Health Fund provides health care to underserved children. Basically, all the children that don't have health insurance and can't afford medical care. Its sad that so many children out there have medical issues that go unresolved because they simply can't afford to go to a doctor. We pledged $1 for every homerun hit by the Yankees this season, and so far we're off to a good start. We'll keep a running tally throughout the season. 161 games to go...

Melky Cabrera - 1 HR = $1.00

Child Gang Activity to Delay Home Opener

It appears the violent activity of local child gangs will delay the opening of the season at Yankee Stadium by at least an hour. Earlier today there was a nerf gun shoot out outside of Yankee stadium that has killed and wounded dozens. The child gangs recently appeared near the stadium to sell their most profitable product: candy. With several gangs vying for customers in a relatively small area there has been a sharp increase in violence.

"I don't understand why we can't just sell our Bon Bons and move along. There's plenty of money to be made by all of us." Said Red Ranger of the Cabbage Patch Thug gang.

"I'm selling some gummy bears, then all of a sudden, we're getting run up on by some rival gangs. Its bad enough we need to look out for cops." He continued.

But other gangs don't share the same view.

"It's all about location. Here I am offering a man a Snickers bar, and he tells me 'No thanks. I copped a Heath bar down the street.' They're taking our customers!" Said Pooh Bear of the Notorious Ninja Turtles street crew.

Police officials are concerned that the problems could escalate. "Look, these child gangs are dangerous. They have laser guns, laser swords, ninja turtle nunchucks, they've even been sawing off their nerf guns. This children gang violence will only escalate."

The appearance of these child gangs came shortly after Yankee manager Joe Girardi removed all the candy out of the club house and replaced it with healthy snacks. The children gangs seized this opportunity to bring their product to the players.

"Yeah I cop from these kids." Said Yankees reliever Kyle Farnsworth. "I typically don't like getting anything from the Forocious Teddy Bear gang because their product is the weakest."

When asked what he meant, Farnsworth explained: "They always have malt balls and sour skittles. I don't want that crap. Sometimes I want a Charleston Chew. Strawberry flavored. I have to go all the way around the stadium to get it from the Notorious Ninja Turtles. They also have some Baby Ruth's which are my favorite."

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez agrees with Farnsworth. "I've been chewing gum since I was a kid, and now Girardi takes away the candy? That's fine. I'll just go get it from the Flintstones Vitamin crew. I ask for Bam Bam. He always hooks me up with as much bubbleyum as I want."

Because of the violence some gangs have opted to stay away from the Yankee stadium candy scene all together. "We gave up the candy." Said Trickster a member of the Tricycle Riders gang. "We do grand theft Tonka trucks. Why stand on a corner day and night, when I can just heist a bulldozer? There's far less violence in the Tonka truck trade."

The FBI had gotten involved to figure out who the distributors were but did not find much. They believed for a time that Yankees outfielder Melky Cabrera was responsible after finding "Melky Way" bars in a stash house of the Notorious Ninja Turtles crew. However they could never quite prove that they came from Melky himself. In one interrogation with a Notorious Ninja Turtles lieutenant the FBI was barely able to find out what his name was. "He had no ID on him because he's 4. Then I'm asking him his name and he keeps telling me its He Man. Of course I don't believe him, so I say 'Listen punk', right there he cuts me off saying 'I know you are but what am I?' How do you combat that kind of logic? I tried to break him down by calling him names, but he kept saying 'I'm rubber and your glue.' I asked how much money he makes in the candy trade and he says 'infinity times infinity times infinity'. I knew he was lying because my calculator kept giving me 'error' when I tried to enter that equation. I ask who runs the candy trade and he tells me 'Big Bird'. Then he drew a picture with some crayons of a dinosaur and handed it to me. This kids drawing really sucked, but I could see I was defeated."

The Yankees remain optimistic that they will be able to get the game started relatively early, but can only hope the violence stays under control. "I'm here for the children." Said Derek Jeter.

Game Prediction

No opening day would be complete without a senseless prediction. So here's how the game will go.

1st Inning: Chien Ming Wang loads the bases before getting three consecutive strike outs to end the inning. "Don't (expletive deleted) with me!" He yells at Frank Thomas as he comes off the mound.

Derek Jeter hits an opposite field double, but takes third because he feels like it. Aaron Rowand complains, but Jeter yells "Ha!" behind him and confuses the crap out of him. Gibbons pulls Rowand out of the game. A-Rod applauds his efforts.

2nd Inning: Wang plunks the first batter, but then gets a double play with the next pitch. The next batter hits a line drive back at Wang which he catches bare handed and doesn't even blink. He then crushes the ball in his hand while staring down Greg Zaun in the on deck circle. Zaun starts shaking uncontrollably.

Giambi hits a homerun putting the Yankees ahead 1 - 0. Matsui hits a single. When he reaches first, he pulls out the artist rendered picture of his wife and kisses it.

3rd Inning: Wang gives up 2 runs after he relies heavily on a developing cutter. Its not as good as Mariano's.

Cano hits a double and Melky follows suit, tieing up the game at 2. The C & C boys staying at it.

4 - 6th Innings: Nothing really happens. Score still 2 - 2.

7th Inning: Eckstein hits a pop up that falls three feet in front Bobby Abreu scoring a run. Girardi goes nuts and pulls Abreu out of the game putting in Shelley. Abreu explains that he didn't have his dulce before the game and his energy was low. Girardi reopens the candy cabinet.

Posada hits a single, but is caught stealing second by Halladay who spin throws him out. Posada's quest for 40 steals is off to a rough start. The game is interrupted when a fan runs on the field and is plowed over by Shelley Duncan who after drawing a walk rounded first a little too aggresively. The fan is air lifted out of the stadium.

8th Inning: Farnsworth loads the bases and gives up a triple to Alex Rios. He then grabs his back in pain. Farnsworth pulled out of game with back spasms, but wants to pitch tomorrow. Blue Jays up 5 - 2.

9th Inning: Latroy Hawkins holds the game down by getting three consecutive groundballs. "He was my idea!" Yells Cashman. In the middle of the 9th, Rays manager Joe Maddon interrupts the Yankees game with a press conference where he calls Duncan's acts from the previous inning "Borderline criminal." The commissioner's office looks into the situation.

Melky, Damon, and Jeter all get on base for A-Rod with two outs. After working a full count, he crushes the next pitch into the new stadium's construction site. "I'm coming for you Maris!" he yells as he rounds the bases.

Hank Steinbrenner calls a press conference after the game calling out the Rays for their interruption. "I've written my last welfare check to those guys." He says. "I'm keeping this enfamil all to myself."
