Yanks Shame Themselves and Their Ancestors

The Good

Darrell Rasner, the Yankees' new Ace, pitched 8 innings and gave up only 2 earned runs. Having Rasner in the minor league system was largely the reason the Yanks did not aggressively pursue Santana in the off-season. When you have an ace ready to emerge in AAA you just don't make a long term commitment to free agent pitcher who doesn't love the Yankees, only their money (that's right, I just called Santana a gold digger. What's he going to do about it? I'll punch him right in his pitching arm.).

The Bad

Darrell Rasner, the Yankees' new Ace, pitched 8 innings and gave up 2 earned runs. In a game in which we need our staff ace to give us nine scoreless innings, Rasner failed miserably, and he should go think about what he did.

The Ugly

That's three straight losses for Rasner. What's ugly about it is that yesterday's game and his second to last start, in which he pitched 6.1 innings of 1 run ball, should not have been losses. Rasner should be at 5-1, instead he's 3-3 with a 2.58 ERA. That is patently ridiculous.

The Tax Deduction

The "Respect Jeter's Gangster" blog joined Johnny Damon's homerun club, which raises money for the Children's Health Fund. We are pledged to donate $1.00 for every homerun the Yankees hit this season. We will keep a running tally of the homeruns hit and the money donated throughout the season. In an effort to deny Rasner any run support, the Yanks hit no home runs.

Melky Cabrera 6hr = $6.00
Alex Rodriguez 8hr = $8.00
Hideki Matsui 6 hr = $6.00
Bobby Abreu 7hr = $7.00
Jorge Posada 1hr = $1.00
Jason Giambi 12hr = $12.00
Johnny Damon 6hr = $6.00
Morgan Ensberg 1hr = $1.00
Robinson Cano 4hr = $4.00
Chad Moeller 1hr = $1.00
Wilson Betemit 3hr = $3.00
Derek Jeter 3hr = $3.00
Shelley Duncan 1hr = $1.00
Total = $59.00

Too Tired

I'll post the game summary tomorrow. But let me just say that this was shameful. Ras goes 8 innings, 2 runs and the Yanks lose? That's worse than when he pitched 6.1 innings of 1 run ball and the Yanks lost. Get it together offense, that is patently shameful and ridiculous.

Miscellaneous Thoughts on a Lazy Friday Afternoon

I'm not a big fan of the NBA but I generally follow the playoffs and root for the eastern conference in the finals. Last night's performance, post knee injury, by Paul Pierce was one of those performances that we may be talking about for a while. It was very impressive.

The New York Times had an article today about Mark Melancon and how he is to succeed Mariano Rivera. I've never paid much attention to the guys in our farm system and I still don't. Lately it seems like you're not allowed to root for a team if you don't know who the middle reliever for the class A farm team is and his high school GPA. But I frankly don't give a flying [censored and fined by the FCC] about any of these kids in the minors. Remember when Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy were going to deliver world series after world series after world series after curing cancer? Well, they both sucked this season. That's not to say they won't be good, but neither of them are good now. Nor are any of these guys pitching in AAA. When they pitch well in the majors I'll pay attention, when they're striking out rusty smith, the catcher for the AA Kansas City franchise I don't want to hear about them. People make such a big deal about the farm, and I it's good to develop your own players, but please stop acting like these stats transfer to the majors. Look how dominant Joba was in the eighth. He couldn't get through 3 innings with 70 pitch cap. Joba will be a good starter in the majors but he's not now. Mark Melancon may be the next Rivera (unlikely), but he's not now and I definitely don't want to hear about him, or anybody else on the farm until they show up on the mound and I'm like, "who the [redacted by NSA] is number 79?" Until they pitch well up here, they're just a bunch of names on a list in obscure baseball magazines that no one reads unless they have serious social deficiencies. Enough is enough. No more minor league saviors. They're still in the minors for a reason.

Can we stop talking about horses as athletes? They're bred to do nothing but run and then they're whipped until they run as fast as possible. Whip the shite out of me and I'm Carl Lewis, that's all there is to it.

Alright, that's enough sun exposure talking. Enjoy the KC game.

Checking in from Lagos, Nigeria

Just wanted to check in from across the ocean. I see the Yankees have pieced together a couple wins which is good, but the sharp increase in ninja attacks is cause for alarm. Mussina has turned back the clock. I believe that's 9 wins for him and he leads the team in that category. Maybe he'll get the ever evasive 20 win season he's always wanted. Wang needs to step it up. I wonder if something may be wrong with him. Either way, I hope everyone is doing well. Things are good over here. We've been doing a lot of medical work, which my degree in History from the University of Massachusetts has thoroughly equipped me for. I'm helping to do a presentation on diabetes on Monday. Its going to be awesome. Until later, keep up the gangster.

Yanks Walk-Off in the Ninth

The Good

Wang held the Jays to 7 runs over 4.1 innings and Farnsworth limited them to 1 run in the ninth, which was perfect since the Yanks scored nine runs. Giambi had a 2 run walk-off homerun, and Betemit also hit one out for the second game in a row. If he keeps this up, he'll break Barry Bonds' single season HR record sometime in August. Posada was back behind the plate going 1 for 3. In fact everyone in the starting line up had a hit. It was also another late inning, come from behind win. Veras with two innings of scoreless ball? Lots of good to report tonight.

The Bad

A close game and Girardi didn't get thrown out? What's that all about? Both Betemit and Cano grounded into double plays and should probably be traded. Melky had an error in the outfield and should probably be traded.

The Ugly

After a win like this you feel all warm inside and you don't really want to focus on the ugly. But 6 earned runs in 4.1 innings? Seriously? I could've done that! And this time, I'm not just saying that, I really could've done that. Wang needs to get it together. He's pitching like Ian Kennedy for crying out loud. Dash Bamit.

In a blatant attempt to affect my brother's solvency both Giambi and Betemit hit homeruns today. Bastards.

Historic Night for Jeter

The Good

Mike Mussina kept it gangster and continued to baffle younger hitters (which at this point in his career is every hitter). Between tales about the old country and his exploits during "the war" Mussina managed six innings of one run ball, throwing 103 pitches. He's probably headed to all-star game. Derek Jeter had hit No. 2,416 to surpass Mickey Mantle on the all-time Yankees hit list and take sole possession of third place. That's a lot of notches on your belt. He is within 305 hits of Babe Ruth. Either next season or the following He will surpass Ruth and be the all-time Yankees hits leader. Quite an accomplishment for the young man from Kalamazoo.

The Bad

Did you see the Blue Jays trying to hit? They suck. To quote Homer Simpson, "They were the suckiest bunch of sucks who ever sucked." Not much to complain about the Yankees in last night's game. Cano had a hit, Farnsworth managed a scoreless inning. I guess Joe Girardi could have gotten himself tossed and show all that "fire" New York fans demand for some inexplicable reason. I guess that was bad.

The Ugly

After leaving the game in the sixth, Mussina went back to the clubhouse where he was attacked by ninjas. He showed no mercy, what he did to those men was not pretty, it was ugly, and it created a lot of work for the clubbies who had to clean up the mess before the end of the game.

The Math

We are pledged to donate $1.00 for every homerun the Yankees hit this season. We will keep a running tally of the homeruns hit and the money donated throughout the season. Wilson Betemit got into the spirit of the season (not this season per se, but a season) and hit a homerun for charity. Granted he may be unaware of this but still, kudos.

Melky Cabrera 6hr = $6.00
Alex Rodriguez 8hr = $8.00

I've Found a Way to Move Farnsworth

SI reported a story recently about a minor leaguer who was traded for 10 baseball bats. Granted these bats were maple, but still. They retail for $65.50 if you buy 6 or more so essentially this player was worth $655 to his team. Of course, at the time there was also an immigration issue holding up his joining the team so unloading the contract made sense.

Now, I figure we can get at least 12 bats for Farnsworth, 3 helmets, a bucket of official major league baseballs, and a bucket of sunflower seeds (in case Victor Martinez is feeling moody).

Joba's Debut Makes Us Better Human Beings

The Good

Joba had his first start of the season. One person in the crowd was miraculously healed when he stepped on the mound. One cynical man realized life was worth living after all, and hungry children everywhere were fed. Also, after he left the game, Joba saved the 4 train from ninjas. Giese relieved chamberlain and pitched 3.2 innings and only gave up 1 run, which isn't terrible.

The Bad

Joba had his first start of the season. He threw 38 pitches in the first and was out after 2.1 innings. He also gave up 2 runs. It was not a good performance, but in fairness he shouldn't be getting stretched out in the majors. Ramirez gave up 4 runs and didn't get a single out. My guess is he's begun to throw the change up too much again.

The Ugly

What happened yesterday was not Joba's fault. This plan to stretch Joba out in the majors was a poor choice. Having to find ways to get him into games to throw X number of pitches was a stupid plan. The idea of starting a pitcher with a 70 pitch limit is ridiculous. Especially a young pitcher. You're asking a lot of your bullpen because you know Joba's only going to pitch so much. You're also asking a lot of your next starter who now has to go 7 innings at least just to save the pen. I understand the innings limits and I understand why they began the season with Joba as a reliever only to convert him later but this is not the way to go about it. Especially since you're conducting this experiment in games that count.

Farnsworth Blows It

The Good

Let's not even bother shall we.

The Bad

Farnsworth gives up the winning run. Simply put, this guy is not to be trusted with a lead less than two. He was pitching well until recently but we're seeing the old, I'll intimidate hitters with my fastball up in the zone, Farnsworth again. He is what he is.

The Ugly

Pettite had thrown about 65 pitches when he got into trouble in the sixth. He should've been cruising. His pitch count was down, he had the lead, instead he let the Twins tie the game twice. Lovely performance all around.

Darrell Rasner Is Human After All

The Good

Derek Jeter hit a solo home run, accounting for all of the Yankees' offense. This home run puts him on pace to break my major league single season home run record of 0. Betemit went 0 for 4 which is good in the sense that he is clearly committed and doggedly determined to not succeed at the plate, and is achieving exactly that.

The Bad

Rasner going 5.1 innings and giving up four runs is perhaps more mediocre than bad, but doing that after a twelve inning game when you want to save the bullpen as much as possible puts it squarely in the bad zone. Note that that is two games in a row where Rasner has pitched and the offense stayed home. More on that in "The Ugly."

The Ugly

No one on the team mustered more than one hit against a pitcher who gave up a home run to Derek Jeter. That is ridiculously ugly. Not to be seen in public ugly. So ugly nobody will date you including all manner of circus and fictional comic book freak. Now with that being said let's move on.
