Who's on Third?

Now that Nix has been outrighted to AAA, I think we need to have a serious conversation about third base. Should we really be throwing $12 million at Kevin Youkilis? Put aside his face for a moment. Youkilis, if healthy, is a solid player and a gamer. A Paul O'Neill type if there ever was one. He's friends with Jeter and wouldn't be any sort of clubhouse problem. But $12 million?

Does anyone remember Scott Brosius? Do we really need a $12 million player at third to win a championship? Why not let Nix play? If we really need an upgrade after this season, we can think about it next year, and we wouldn't be in any different position than we would be if Youkilis accepted his overpriced one year deal anyway.

I don't like the idea of him Youkilis playing for us. He can go back to Boston where he belongs.

Go back to Brosius' stats, they are kind of eye-opening. Through much of his time with the Yankees he was rather bad. The championships, clutch hits and something about his demeanor gave him that Mystery Element X that causes most Yankee fans (myself included) to remember him as much better than he really was.

We shouldn't need a $12 million player at third to win, the problem is when our options are a decent player who can command $12 million in a tight market and Jayson Nix. I suspect we will find out just what Nix can do as a starting third baseman because Youkilis will prefer a two-year reunion with Francona in Cleveland. Comments like Anonymous's are telling, Yankee fans despise Youkilis and he will not want to deal with their crap if he struggles or gets hurt, plus he needs the security of that two-year deal.

Yeah, I'm pulling for Nix getting that job. What's the point of having a backup infielder if you're not going to use them when you lose your starting infielder? Was that not the purpose of the backup in the first place?

Nix did a decent job for us last year. He is not great, but not bad either.

I'm not sure what sending Nix to AAA means for him getting the job. It has to reduce the Yankees' flexibility in deciding what to do with him.
