Yankees Finalize Deal With Ichiro
It appears that the Ichiro signing is officially official. Although the terms of the deal have not been disclosed, reports have indicated that it was for money, paid in the form of US currency. This locks down right field for the next couple years, which makes the outfield all-lefty leaning. An all-lefty outfield has been Cashman's dream since he was a child, and its great to see him achieve his life's ambition. To ensure his all-lefty outfield is not polluted by a right-hander, Cashman is also in talks with outfield/DH option Raul Ibanez. The 2013 Yankees are shaping up to be like the 2012 Yankees only 1 year older, and missing key contributors in Nick Swisher, and Russell Martin. Should be really exciting!

Thanks for making it sink in that this is exactly the same team as last year, except with downgrades at RF and C, plus Youkilis. Plus a closer who on the one hand is the greatest of all time, and the other is old and potentially on the verge of a true career-ending injury.
I can understand why the Yankees won't give Swisher the four or more years he demands. But with Pierzynski signing a one-year deal with the Rangers, failing to make a move at catcher bothers me. They probably could have had Martin back on a reasonable deal, and now they have to hope that Romine or Cervelli suddenly learns to hit major league pitching. The list of remaining FA catchers isn't pretty.
Yeah with Pierzynski off the board, I think the Yankees have to commit to an in house catcher. With the offensive downgrade, I think we can make up for the lack of offense with key contributions from our current players: 40 homeruns from Cano, .300 batting average from Granderson, 80 stolen bases from Gardner, full seasons out of Jeter and Ichiro, Teixeira learning how to hit again, etc.

What's with Teixeira, anyway?
I'm wondering the same thing about Teixeira. It'd be too easy to say that he's in decline, but he's only 32 years old. After hitting in the high .200's if not in the .300's early on in his career, he's had three straight seasons with the Yankees where he's hovered around .250. This was fine when he gave us 39 homeruns and 100 RBI's, but doesn't look so great when he gives us 24 homeruns and drives in about 80 runs.
