Baltimore Comes to Town

The Good

Taking three of four is good. Nova back where he belongs is good. Twelve runs in the first is good. Teixeira, Swish (twice), and Jones all hit home runs. That is also good. By and large good pitching performances, though you'd like to see a little more length out of Colon and Garcia.

The Bad

At one point, in the first inning of Saturday's night game, Orioles first baseman Mark Reynolds thought aloud to himself, "Man, this is like an Xbox." To which a Yankee baserunner responded, "No. I'm pretty sure you guys put up more of a fight than this on the Xbox." Reynolds placed his glove over his face so he could cry in private.

The Ugly

Nova should not be pitching in the minors. Hughes is still getting himself worked out. Where do players generally get themselves worked out? In the minors. Even when Hughes has pitched well, he hasn't given us length. Length. Like the seven innings Nova gave us on Saturday night for example. WTF is this even a conversation?

Weekend Haul

We got four home runs this weekend. One apiece for Teixeira and Andruw Jones, two for Nick Swisher. That's $8 for the kids and something to think about for Baltimore pitching coach Rick Adair.

Mark Teixeira 29hr = $58
Curtis Granderson 28hr = $56

Rest In Peace Irabu

It is being reported that former Yankees pitcher Hideki Irabu was found dead yesterday in what is being investigated as a possible suicide. Situations like these are always tragic, and make me pause for a moment and count my blessings. Irabu was a starter for the Yankees from 1997 - 1999, and won two championships with the team in that time. He later played for the Expos and the Rangers, and then went back to Japan to continue playing there. Our prayers will be with the family.

Hughes Was Too Legit to Quit, But Felix Was Too Legit to Lose

The Good

Hughes finished with a good line, giving up just 2 runs over 6 innings despite giving up 9 hits. His fastball was hitting 93 mph, which apparently makes a world of difference. Gardner drew a couple walks and stole a base.

The Bad

Curtis Grandersons errors led to too many runs scoring, saddling the bullpen with an inflated run total they do not feel responsible for. It doesn't look like it much mattered though, seeing as the Yankees could not hit King Felix.

The Ugly

The Mariners ended their losing streak yesterday at 17 games. Having tasted victory, the Mariners have an insatiable taste for more, and will not stop until they get at least another win.

Nothing

That's how much money we're donating to the Children's Health Fund after the Yankees poor showing with the bats yesterday.

So Close

The Good

Sabathia was so dominant, he was almost perfect! 14 strikeouts last night and the 15th win of the season for him. Teixeira and Granderson both hit their 28th homerun of the season.

The Bad

Everyone seems to think that Sabathia lost his no-hit stuff after the rain delay. Putting the blame on rain is a tactic straight out of the history books, most prominently used by the Spanish armada in their loss against England.

The Ugly

The Mariners losing streak extended to 17 games last night. Today they have their best chance to snap that with King Felix going against Phil Hughes. This will be a telling game for Hughes. We'll see if he's able to step up for this game, or continue struggling his way through starts.

Hey You! Get Off My Cloud!

You don't know them and you don't know their style! A little Method Man to warn you that Teixeira and Granderson are in their own class. They each hit their 28th homerun of the season, giving more than enough run support for CC.

At Least They Still Have Ichiro

The Good

Freddy Garcia had his longest outing of the season, a 7.2 innings 3-run effort. Jeter hit a homerun and a triple proving that he can still flex when he needs to. Steve Garrison made his major league debut, locking down the last two outs of the 9th.

The Bad

The Mariners losing streak was extended to 16 straight games. Emissaries from the Kansas City Royals and the Pittsburgh Pirates were sent to the Mariners clubhouse to assist the grieving players.

The Ugly

In the same way that we had to come to grips with Jeter's decline, it appears the Mariners need to come to grips with the humanity of Ichiro Suzuki. For the first time in his major league career, he looks poised to finish with a sub .300 batting average. Luckily, we still have Mariano, who much like fine wine, seems to get better with age.

They Left the Game Mentally and Physically Bent

We represent! That would be an Inspectah Deck line continuing our theme of Wu-Tang inspired lyrics. Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter hit homeruns to assist the babies at the Children's Health Fund.

Colon Bests the Athletics

The Good

Bartolo Colon continues to defy Father Time and Father Invasive Shoulder Surgery, delivering 7 innings of 2 run ball against the A's. Asked about his performance after the game, Colon responded through an interpreter, "Athletics? They ain't so Athletic! I'm Athletic!" It was a strange response to a question about pitch selection.

The Bad

The Bullpen was not exactly great in this one. Robertson gave up two runs in .2 innings. Mariano, who got a four out save, also gave up a run. That, of course, was in protest of being used in an inning other than the ninth, a little trick he picked up from his time with Rafael Soriano.

The Ugly

Let's just say it. The A's need a new color scheme. There's no way to design a uniform with those colors that don't make you think some team executive's 5 year old drew the prototype with his new box of Crayola after eating all the good colors.

Pardon My French But Let Me Speak Italian . . .

Curtis Granderson wildin' in Shaolin! Another Wu-Tang reference, and another home run for the Grandy Man. $2 more for the kids.

Bats Come Alive (Rejected Title of The New Batman Movie)

The Good

The Yankee offense scored 17 runs on Friday, proving that heat causes rage, and rage causes players to hit better. Swisher hit homeruns in both Friday and Saturday's games, and Jeter has gone 5-7 over the past couple days, driving in 3 of the 17 runs on Friday. Hector Noesi continues to impress with a 3.2 innings scoreless releif appearance of Phil Hughes.

Wade, Ayala, and Robertson have all pitched pretty well for us. They all have ERA's in the 1's.

The Bad

Phil Hughes pitched 4.1 innings of 7 run ball getting pulled for Hector Noesi, when our 7 run lead was looking a little shaky. Now I know Phil Hughes pitched well for us last season, but you know who was pitching well for us this season? Ivan Nova.

The Ugly

Despite a new pitching and life philosophy, AJ Burnett was saddled with his 8th loss of the season, after a 5.2 inning 3-run effort. He's now 8-8 showing that sometimes a new outlook on life still doesn't make you a winner, but it can still make you a multi-millionaire. Keep your head up AJ.

Homeruns Come, Babies Shout for Joy

Swisher has had homeruns in back-to-back games, and Teixeira hit another one to bringing this weekends RJG donations to the Children's Health Fund up to $6. Lets see what happens in todays game.

Mark Teixeira 26hr = $52
Curtis Granderson 26hr = $52
Russell Martin 10hr = $20
Alex Rodriguez 13hr = $26

Total = $258

Curse Those Rays!

The Good

Sabathia had another great start going 8 innings and allowing 2 runs. The Yankees could not get anything going against Shields, but Jeter and Cano had back-to-back doubles to bring the Yankees within a run.

The Bad

Despite a really good pitching effort by Sabathia, he lost the game 2-1. That's baseball though.

The Ugly

Approximately $19.5 million in bullpen money is on the DL.

Yesterday's game really could have gone either way. Up until the final Kyle Farnsworth fastball, I thought we had a chance. We split this series with the Rays and have the Athletics coming to town, followed by the Mariners and the Orioles. Here's hoping we gain some traction in this home stand.

Yankees Don't Allow Homeruns. Period.

The Yankee pitchers had not allowed a homerun in 8 straight games. Apparently, this applied to the Yankee hitters too. No homeruns yesterday.

I've Been Proven Wrong

The Good

Garcia pitched 6.2 scoreless innings with 7 strikeouts featuring a mean splitter that the Rays had trouble with all night. At the beginning of the season I had no hope that we would have both Colon and Garcia healthy this late into the season. Colon had his hamstring thing, but that wasn't the type of injury concern we had with him. We were more concerned of injuries of the blown shoulder variety. Not only do we still have Colon and Garcia, but they're pitching pretty well, and this despite so inconsistant starts.

Granderson hit a nice 2-run homerun giving the Yankees the lead in the first inning. He later tried to enter the Harry Potter train station by running through the outfield wall, but was hindered by the laws of physics.

Our bullpen continues to impress.

The Bad

Here's a humbling fact, Hector Noesi, Boone Logan, Cory Wade, Dave Robertson, Luis Ayala, combined, still make less money than Rafael Soriano.

The Ugly

David Price drilled Granderson in the back with a 95 mph fastball. It wasn't on purpose but still, getting drilled like that after hitting a homerun just doesn't look right.

Yankees Getting Their Swagger Back

Granderson's first inning homerun adds $2 more dollars to the babies at the Children's Health Fund.

Yankees Lose Sight of Win

The Good

Colon can still pitch! Colon went 6.1 innings allowing 3 runs, 2 earned and struck out 9. The Yankees broke their homerless streak with a jack by Cano, and Cory Wade continued to impress with another scoreless inning, which takes me to some potential good:

In this post from Chad Jennings of the Journal News, Chad outlines some statements made by Girardi about the setup role:

Girardi didn’t want to commit to Soriano’s role when he comes back. Girardi has previously said Soriano would take back the eighth-inning role. “He has been out [sic] eighth-inning guy,” Girardi said today. “We’ve got to see how he’s throwing and how he’s feeling before I can make any determination. The big thing is we’ve got to get him back healthy and throwing the way he’s capable of. We’ll just see what happens, but we’ve got to get him back first.”

Do personal feelings matter when deciding who gets the eighth inning? “No. I’ve got to do what’s best for our team. That’s what I have to do. Let’s see how he’s throwing the ball, let’s see how he feels and how he bounces back, and then we’ll make decisions. Right now, it’s just hypotheticals. My favorite. Makes for good news and stories.”

So why is this potentially good news? Well, its no secret that Soriano has sucked this season, while Dave Robertson has been amazing. Robertson deserves the 8th inning spot. The fact that Girardi is not prepared to hand the spot back to Soriano gives hope that maybe Robertson will be pitching in the 8th, with Soriano spelling Robertson from time-to-time. How does an egotistical player respond to a demotion? Typically not well, and typically not rationally. I'm hoping that Soriano is relegated to middle releif, and that at the end of the season he opts out of this ridiculous contract to seek a closing role elsewhere, thus freeing us of the first real Hal Steinbrenner mistake.

More Good

Gardner is out-hitting and out-stealing Carl Crawford. How's that feel for a bargain?

The Bad and the Ugly

The Rays stadium. The Rays have been trying to build a new stadium for a few years now, but apparently the mayor of St. Petersburg won't let them look for sites outside of the city, which is the latest snag for the plan. The Rays could be playing in the proposed stadium in Tampa pictured here:

Source

Instead they play here:

Source

So ugly.

Finally, Someone Thinks of the Babies

Cano hit a homerun breaking the spell of selfish hoarding that has characterized the RJG since they stopped hitting homeruns. That's $2 for the Children's Health Fund's homerun club.

Yanks Edge Out Rays

The Good

Despite a lackluster effort from Burnett, the Yankees still edged out a win, and much of that is due to the efforts of the bullpen. Hector Noesi danced out of a bases loaded jam in the 6th left by Burnett, and him combined with Robertson and Mariano did not allow a single run for the rest of the game. At that point the Yankee offense could wait for one of their 9 walks to score a run.

The Bad

Burnett's first couple innings come to mind. He settled down after that, but with 4 runs on the board you're off to an early deficit. We really need Burnett to be sharp for a playoff run.

The Ugly

The Yankees won the game off of a 20-year-old call up Alexander Torres. With the bases loaded, the Yanks drew a walk, splitting the game wide-open, or so it seems when you have to face Mariano Rivera in the 9th.

Homerless Spell Continues

And the children suffer. No homeruns means no money for the babies at the Children's Health Fund.

Hughes and Gardner Taking Steps Forward

The Good

80 pitches was enough for Hughes to get through 6 innings, allowing just 2 runs and recording his first win of the season. Gardner went 3-4 with a walk leading off, and stole two bases while he was at it. Gardner's been on a tear of late. He has a 5-game hit streak where he's gone 11 for 19.

Also good is Cory Wade who continues to get outs, and Dave Robertson who should really be our setup guy. Even Boone Logan struck out 3 in the 9th inning to end the game yesterday. All around impressive performance from the bullpen.

The Bad

The Ubaldo Jiminez rumors are flying around, and one piece of information is that the Rockies would want our 4 top prospects. That would be the killer-B's (minus Brackman), Jesus Montero, and probably Ivan Nova. An intelligent being would reject this trade, but an emotional being, the kind that would pay $30 million to a setup guy with a history of injury, may not.

The Ugly

Ramiro Pena's batting average is .080. Just saying, that's pretty ugly.

The Bronx Singles Hitting Yankees!

No homeruns yesterday or the day before. The Yankees are carving out runs with clean singles, which is good for the team, but not good for charity. Particulary the Children's Health Fund's homerun club.

Jays Take Second Straight Game

The Good

Garcia didn't give up any runs in the second and third innings. Also, playing in a dome means weather is a non-factor.

The Bad

Garcia did give up runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings. Six runs in total, five earned.

The Ugly

The concept of the earned run seems problematic to me. We can't simply say a guy gave up runs, we have to throw it in his face and point out that he 'earned' them with his crappy performance. I guess whoever invented baseball statistics was a real d**k.

Where's Our Derby Champion?

No home runs last night. Our guys get a little disoriented when playing in a dome, spending most of the game wondering where the sky went.

What Just Happened?

The Good

Jose Bautista came out of the game early on with an ankle injury. That's good news for Freddy Garcia tonight.

The Bad

We got destroyed. It was bad. Bartolo came out in the first inning, due in part to his inability to get the final out, but also due in part to an error by Nunez and a couple lucky swinging bunts, each of which drove in a run. Bartolo said that he's not feeling confident in his leg after his hamstring injury, so he's not coming down on it with authority. His confidence in his hamstring is about the same confidence there is in his rotation spot if he keeps this up.

The Ugly

Jeter's absence from the All-Star game was criticized in the media and by players as they believed that if you're voted in by the fans, you should represent the fans and show up. Even if you don't play, you should show up. However, we would argue that Jeter represented the fans way more accurately with his absence. By not showing up, Jeter was standing in solidarity with the vast majority of baseball fans who didn't show up to watch the All-Star game either. So thank you Jeter for representing us, the common fans.

Cano Mad With Power After Derby, but Doesn't Produce

Andrew Jones hit a homerun for the children, but Cano, this years homerun derby champion could only muster 3 measly singles. Cano's power madness has driven him into isolation, and some fear for the pitcher he takes his power induced rage out on. Hopefully it happens tonight.

All-Star Reflections

So the All-Star game is now over and it would now appear that the AL domination over the NL is over. It doesn't help that some of the premier AL pitchers have moved to the NL (Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee), but it also doesn't help that a guy like Prince Fielder can launch a 3-run homerun on command. And that shortly after dropping a pop fly that seemed to hit off his wrist. But Fielder isn't there because of his spry cat-like defense he's there for his bat, and at the end of this season, he's a free agent. So here's the question: with the pitching market looking weak as ever, should the Yankees consider adding a permanent DH in Prince Fielder? Of course the cost will be enormous, but the the truth is, we may very well need to add offense to off set weaknesses in our rotation. Right now, Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia are major players in our rotation, and you simply can't rely on that for a second season. We have some promising young pitchers, but you have to give them time to develop and you have to give them run support. Then we need to consider the facts, A-Rod's health issues are indicative of a player who's aging and potentially declining. It happens. When healthy he should still produce, but can we really expect A-Rod to hit 40 homeruns and have 100 RBI's as he used to? However, Prince Fielder's a big guy, and a super long term contract, the kind the Yankees are known to give, may just be setting us up for similar problems down the road. But the question remains, do we acquire a bat like Fielder's to make up for what could potentially be a weak rotation next season?

Constantine Charlamagne Sabathia

The Good

I bet you didn't know that was his real name, but CC Sabathia really put the team on his back yesterday. He pitched a complete game shut out with 9 strikeouts in a 1-0 Yankees win. The Yankees scored because of errors. If Tampa Bay had not made those errors, its possible the game would still be on.

The Bad

Since when is James Shield a dominant pitcher? When did this happen? We had to rely on errors to beat him!

The Ugly

Our powerful offense was limited to just 4 hits. That's 1 shy of what Jeter had in Saturday's game when he broke 3,000. They can take the next 3 days of the All-Star break to think about their performance.

Will Anyone Think of the Children?

Not yesterday. The Yankees scored one run and didn't even have the decency to make a solo homer. No money for the babies at the Children's Health Fund.

Jeter Makes History

The Good

Isn't it just like Jeter to go 5-5 and hit a homerun to reach 3,000 hits in his career? He even got the go-ahead RBI to win the game. This is the Jeter we remember. Not a guy who was overpowering, but will still go out and beat you. His gangster has been reestablished.

The Bad

Robertson had a blown save and got the win. I suspect collusion was involved.

The Ugly

Did you see Price's curveball to Jeter for his 3,000th hit? That was ugly. It looked like it wanted to break, but after seeing Jeter's gangster, and readily respecting it, it fell in line and got hit for a homerun.

Jeter Thought of the Children

Jeter is mainly a singles hitter this season, but on Saturday afternoon, on the day where all the focus would be on his 3,000th hit, Jeter was thinking of the children. That's 1 homerun, and 2 more dollars for the Children's Health Fund.

Niemann Will Not Be Outdone

The Good

We continue to be impressed by Hector Noesi, who sat on our bench for about a month before Girardi remembered he was on the roster and could be used in games. He pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of Bartolo Colon. Jeter moved one hit closer to 3,000 with a double off Niemann, but would hold there. Cano hit his 15th homerun of the season.

The Bad

Bartolo Colon lasted 5.2 innings and gave up 5 runs on 10 hits and 4 walks. His one strikeout simply wasn't enough against an offense that was considered to be significantly weaker with the loss of Carlos Pena and Carl Crawford.

The Ugly

It was a sad, sad sight to behold. Kyle Farnsworth shutting out his former team with a scoreless 9th. If only he had done that with us, he might still be in New York.

Cano Gets the Children Money

The Yankees scored one run, and it was from a solo shot by Robinson Cano. That's $2 for the children at the Children's Health Fund.

Cleveland Rocks Yankees

The Good

Hughes made his debut, and that's good I suppose. Jeter went 1-3 putting himself within 3 hits of history. Beyond that the game was pretty weak.

The Bad

After 3 months of rest Hughes only lasted 5 innings! He should have gone the full 9 throwing in the mid 100's all through out.

The Ugly

Justin Masterson made easy work of us, shutting us out over 8 innings. We tried to break out against their middle releif, but Mitre reminded us why we let him go at the end of spring training.

No Homers

No homeruns means no money for the children at the Children's Health Fund. Here's hoping for another Curtis Granderson surge.

Sabathia Wants Blood, Granderson Helps Get It

The Good

Sabathia shut out his former team over 7 innings, striking out 11 of his former teammates. People he used to laugh with, share the same soup bowl with, fight over the soup bowl spoon with. It was tragic when you think about it, but Sabathia didn't even blink. And to back him up, Curtis Granderson rediscovered his homerun stroke, hitting two of them last night. Everyone but Cervelli had 2 hits last night, and even without a hit, Cervelli still had an RBI. Jeter is now 4 hits shy of 3,000, which sounds close until you consider that he's 1,004 hits shy of 4,000, which is the milestone he is really reaching for.

The Bad

The Cleveland Indians.

The Ugly

One of Cleveland's releivers is named Josh Judy! That's so close to being Judge Judy! How did he survive high school?!

Granderson Back for the Kids

The Children's Health Fund receives a boost whenever Curtis Granderson goes on a tear, and four homeruns in four games is definitely a tear. Two last night adds $4 to the exchequer of the Children's Health Fund's homerun club.

Couldn't Sweep Mets, Or Take First Game Against Cleveland

The Good

Granderson found his homerun swing over the weekend, hitting one on Saturday and another last night. Derek Jeter returned from his calf injury and assured his fans that his 3,000th hit would not be hit in Cleveland by going 0-4. Freddy Garcia pitched masterfully on Sunday going 7 innings with 1 run. He gave up 6 hits and no walks, and only had one strike out. To pull off 7 innings with less than a hit per inning without strike outs is a Picasso-like pitching masterpiece. Colon also pitched a 6 inning shutout in his first game back from hamstring replacement surgery, also known as resting for 15 days.

The Bad

Phil Hughes came back which is good, but we lost Ivan Nova as a result which is bad. Losing a player for 3 months when they don't even have an injury makes me a little concerned. And no, lack of velocity is not a medically recognized affliction. Its up there with such phantom medical problems as the sickness that forces you out of work on opening day, and whatever malady requires Vitamin B12 shots into your lower back (Looking at you Clemens).

The Ugly

I'll give this to the Ramrio Pena errors on Sunday. We had the brooms in hand, but Ramiro Pena would have no part to it. Mariano couldn't record the same out twice because it would violate the known laws of Cuttoria, the land his cutter hails from.

Someone Please Think of the Children

A couple homeruns by Granderson, plus one from Nunez over the weekend shows that someone is thinking of the babies. That's $6 more smackers for the babies at the Children's Health Fund.

Mark Teixeira 25hr = $50
Curtis Granderson 23hr = $46

Yankees Drop Their Little Brother Mets

The Good

Nova wasn't at his best, but he got the big out with the bases loaded in the 5th, and it was good enough for the win. From there on out, the entire bullpen pitched in the game to lock down the win. Eduardo Nunez went 4-4 on the eve of Jeter's return.

The Bad

Eduardo Nunez made a nice throw after misplaying a relay. Good offense out of the kid, but the defense could use some work.

The Ugly

My brother still does not have any milk, and now he's run out of protein powder. He is now eating cereal with plain water. The way our ancestors used to.

New York Gets the Win, the Babies Don't Get the Money

New York scores 5 runs, but no homeruns for the bombers, so no money for the babies at the Children's Health fund.
