Not Bad

The Good

The offense showed signs of life yesterday!  Teixeira hit a grand slam, giving the Yankees an early lead, and then hits by Hafner and Gardner got us ahead of the Indians after they caught up to us.  We scored 7 runs in total, which is more than we scored all weekend against the Red Sox.

Also good, we haven't gotten rid of Overbay.  Overbay played right field yesterday and did a decent job of it.  As one of the few players that hits when you need him to, and otherwise is one of the few players that puts together good at bats in this lineup, it would have been awful to let him go.  Smart move by the Yankees to find a new position for him.

The Bad

Pettitte's first start back from the DL wasn't great.  He allowed 4 runs across 4.2 innings and struggled mightily in the 5th inning.  Our bullpen pitched well, and managed to keep Cleveland from scoring anymore runs, but it was a rough outing for our stopper.

The Ugly

Before Teixeira hit the grandslam, Cano came up to bat, and promptly grounded out on the first pitch.  This is something that has always frustrated me about Cano.  Swinging on the first pitch works out well only if you get a hit, otherwise it looks like you're impatient, and when your offense has struggled as it has and you have an opportunity to break the game open you don't want to be giving up foolish outs.  Bases loaded 0 outs, is much different than bases loaded 1 out.  A double play ends a bases loaded threat with 1 out.  It all worked out in the end with Teixeira hitting the homerun, but take a pitch Cano!

At Least the Children Don't Need to Continue to Suffer

The Yankees extra base slump finally broke with the Yankees hitting 3 extra base hits, including 2 homeruns.  That's $4 more for the kids.

Travis Hafner 9hr = $18
Vernon Wells 10hr = $20
Brett Gardner 5hr = $10
Kevin Youkilis 2hr = $4
Jayson Nix 1hr = $2
Robinson Cano 14hr = $28
Ichiro Suzuki 2hr = $4
Lyle Overbay 8hr = $16
Brennan Boesch 3hr = $6
Francisco Cervelli 3hr = $6
Chris Stewart 3hr = $6
Ben Francisco 1hr = $2
David Adams 2hr = $4
Curtis Granderson 1hr = $2

Mark Teixeira 1hr = $2

Total 64 hrs = $128

The Yankees traditionally do well when they take pitches and draw walks. Impatience has been a problem for this team. Cano grounding out on the first pitch with the bases loaded
is a good example of that.

Cano drives me crazy with that. It's not the first time he's swung at the first pitch in a big game situation like that.
