Oh Offense Where Art Thou?

The Good

We took the first game against the Red Sox and Sabathia was outstanding.  7.1 innings, 10 strikeouts, at least 3 Red Sox players left in tears.  It was a great start.

The Bad

Hughes' start on Saturday was not what you would hope.  When he left in the 5th inning, he had allowed 5 runs.  Adam Warren came in later in the game and gave up 6 runs across 3 innings.  The Yankees took an 11-1 loss, and that leads us to the ugly...

The Ugly

The offense.  Surely the Yankee offense would rebound with Teixeira and Youkilis back in the lineup, right?  Well the offense continued to flop, struggling to make solid contact, and hit anything that wasn't a single.  The Yankees had one extra base hit all weekend.  A double.  It was like the Yankees had lost the will to hit.  We ended the series taking a 3-0, 6 inning loss, and all I can say is that I think the rain saved us from another otherwise embarrassing blowout.  Through 5 innings yesterday, the Yankees mustered 2 hits, neither of them for extra bases, and 1 walk.

Sad Day for Humanity

Across an entire weekend, the Yankees did not hit a single homerun.  That means that no child was benefited by the selfish Yankees.

Travis Hafner 8hr = $16
Vernon Wells 10hr = $20
Brett Gardner 5hr = $10
Kevin Youkilis 2hr = $4
Jayson Nix 1hr = $2
Robinson Cano 14hr = $28
Ichiro Suzuki 2hr = $4
Lyle Overbay 8hr = $16
Brennan Boesch 3hr = $6
Francisco Cervelli 3hr = $6
Chris Stewart 3hr = $6
Ben Francisco 1hr = $2
David Adams 2hr = $4
Curtis Granderson 1hr = $2

Total 62 hrs = $124

That's what happens when most of your team is comprised of cast-offs. Cashman is good at finding value on the scrap heap, but it's called the scrap heap for a reason. I used to think it was because the players in it are scrappy. Now I know it's because the players in it are crappy. The good news is that the team's over-its-head play before the Mets series will give it a cushion now that reality has set in.

We need a few players to get hot. Right now Teixeira's been pushing the team, but hopefully Wells starts hitting again, and hopefully we can get more out of Hafner, Gardner, Cano and Ichiro. I'm also hoping Adams can start hitting again. He was looking pretty good for a time!
