DeRosa Talks with Giants Intensifying

According to Jon Heyman over at CNNSI.com, the talks between the Giants and outfielder/infielder/DH/pitcher/catcher Mark DeRosa have intensified. The Giants had made DeRosa a two year offer prior to Christmas, and apparently DeRosa has, at the bare minimum, called them back. A signing can only be assumed to be imminent, but other teams may still be in the hunt. The Mets, Red Sox, Yankees, Mariners, Cubs, and every other team that has an outfield opening has to be assumed to be lurking with their wallets wide open according to the basic principles of sports journalism.

what do you guys think the chances of the yankees signing johnny damon now? the yankees are running out of cheap but good options for left, and johnny still hasnt been signed.
despite his weak arm, i wouldnt mind having him patrol left again.

I still think the chances are low. I suspect the Yanks have their eye on some 2010 outfield free agent and so are trying to limit commitments.

Personally, I'd like to see Damon back, but don't see the Yankees being the highest bidder. At this point, Damon has won two World Series and does not necessarily have to play for a team with the best chance to win. He probably goes where the best money is, and I don't think that will be NY (not the Yankees anyway).

Lohud on some left field options.

According to this article in the Daily News, J-Hair may be an option for left. I liked J-Hair and felt he added a good dimension to our bench. I wouldn't mind seeing him return.

DeRosa doesn't look like a $12 million player to me. He's 35, a below-average hitter for his career, and is coming back from a serious wrist injury. That doesn't sound like a good combo for LF. Let the Giants have him.

J-Hair is a decent bench player, but no way is he a starting LF. The Yankees might as well start Gardner if they're considering J-Hair. At least with Gardner you know you'll be getting good speed and defense.

This is all a prelude to a deal or trade no one saw coming, anyway.

Yeah, I'm just not a real big believer in Gardner. Hairston would likely be in some sort of platoon, but at the end of the day I just don't want to see Gardner anywhere near a starting anything job. I know a lot of people like him, but as best I can tell he'd probably hit .230 and doesn't have the arm to keep anyone on third. Or second. Or first for that matter. But you're almost certainly right that all this discussion will be moot as the Yanks will eventually find someone to slot in as their everyday left fielder.

I like Derosa. He's a career .275 hitter with a .343 OBP. Last year was a digression for him, but in 2007 and 2008 his OBP was above .370. Add that to 20 homeruns and 70+ RBI's, and I'd say $6 million is just about right for him. But this is also a moot point considering that he's already signed with the Giants.

that is unless we start a rumor that we saw DeRosa spending some "quality time" with the Dodgers, and then they break up.
