Mariners Reverse Course, Give Up On Season

The Mariners are reportedly close to a deal with the Cubs that would land them Milton Bradley in exchange for Carlos Silva.

After signing Chone Figgins and trading for Cliff Lee, many believed that the Ms had essentially locked up the AL West and were ready to be competitors. However, with the signing of Milton Bradley, the Ms have chosen, instead, to throw in the towel.

Milton Bradley, known for his mad board game skills, has a reputation for tearing apart clubhouses with his post-winning-a-board-game antics. He spends most of his time in the clubhouse defeating teammates in Connect Four, then wearing down their egos with constant trash talk. By the time they get out on the field, most players are barely able to contain the tears, let alone play Major League ball. Bradley is also known for not getting along with water coolers and Lou Piniellas.

I laughed.

Carlos Silva, though? I am pretty sure this means the Cubs would have taken ME for Milton Bradley, and I'm a 5'2", a girl, and incredibly unathletic.

I knew assuming anonymous was a guy would get me in trouble. my apologies. But you didn't deny fighting with yourself, which is strange.

Admittedly, it's not the first time I've made this mistake, as I did it long ago to another commenter (she may have been anonymous also, can't remember). Then, I started assuming that certain commenters were women, only to find out they weren't, so I switched back, but now that's come to bite me. My life is hard. I'm glad you laughed though.

unrelated, but apparently Boston made an $82.5M offer to Holliday prior to signing Lackey. So now, Lackey is spending Holliday's money.

now Heyman is tweeting that the Ms are including cash with Silva. Yep, they definitely gave up. I guess the threat of Matsui in their division overwhelmed them.

Believe it or not, this could be a great move for the M's. Bradley seems to do well when he's not under a national spotlight, and the media in Seattle is pretty mellow. He gives them a legit bat in the order and all he cost them was a terrible 50 ERA+ pitcher that they were overpaying. See my blog for a discussion on this later. I think the M's are making good moves.

This probably works out for them. He can hit and they need that pretty badly. Its pretty low key at games there so fans shouldn't get on him. He worked with the manager in Texas where he was productive. Presumably Wakamatsu would have input in whether they go after guys and he must have given his ok. The other thing that might help is having a guy like Griffey around who can tell some one to chill and seems to engage with team mates.

Silva was just eating a roster spot when he wasn't on the DL or eating anything else he could get his hands on (this is coming from a chubby guy mind you). I did go to one game he pitched that was pretty fun to watch, he gave up eight hits in six innings, but only three runs, Ichiro threw Vlad out at the plate and Gary Mathews Jr. hit into three double plays and grounded out twice more.

I see your point about Bradley's offense, but when he plays "Sorry" he never says sorry. He just knocks you off the board and tell you you suck at Connect Four, then he kicks water coolers all over the clubhouse, getting gatorade on everything. So I don't think his bat makes up for that.
