Yankees Remember What Pitching Looks Like

The Good

6 shutout innings from Javy, the bullpen preserving a 2 run lead, and all our runs driven in by a volunteer from the crowd.

The Bad

Javy laid down a sac bunt in the seventh that hit off his finger. He had thrown only 70 pitches to that point. Also, Mo gave up another run, which means he's too old to be effective out of the 'pen anymore. The Yanks will soon have to decide whether to leave him floundering in the 'pen or convert him to a starter.

The Ugly

Every time a Met hits a long fly ball, he dies just a little bit inside.

"You don't know what it's like," exclaimed Jason Bay. "Do you know what it is to crush balls all day, and have nothing to show for it?!"

Nobody really knew what to do with that question, so we just let it go.

No TV and No Beer Make Homer Something Something

Not go out of the park? Don't mind if I do! No home runs were hit in the production of yesterday's game.

Do you think Joe or anyone else has considered moving Gardner and his .360/.484/.600 slash line in 25 at bats leading off an inning into the leadoff spot? He has walked 5 times and only has 3 strikeouts leading off. So far this year Jeter is batting .293/.303(!!!)/.427 in those situations with 0 walks and 11 strikeouts in 75 at bats. Wouldn't moving Captain Clutch back to his customary 2 spot while Nick the Wrist is out help to optimize the offense? Just wonderin..

The main reason Jeter was moved into the lead off spot was because he was hitting into far too many double plays. Jeter and Gardner are both, basically, slap hitters. The difference is Gardner is much faster than most automobiles, let alone Jeter. This means that Gardner in the two hole equals less double plays than Jeter in the two hole, so I suspect they would be reluctant to switch the two.

I realize this discussion is only relevant to the first inning of any given game, or those innings where Jeter leads off, but line-up decisions seem to be made on the assumption that the one hitter is leading off an inning, not coming up third because the 8th hitter started that particular inning.
