One Weekend of Baseball Wrapped Up In One Convenient Post

The Good

We took the series 3 games to 1, and throughout that time the Yankees hit 4 homeruns, and both Sabathia and Hughes got wins. The Yankees combined for 28 hits against the Mariners this weekend, and with the exception of the game we lost our bullpen got outs and limited runs.

The Bad

Its really difficult to see a starter pitch a shutout for 7 innings, and not get the win. Vazquez has had a rough season, and he's been turning it around, but hasn't had much to show for it of late. The Yankee offense couldn't stand up to King Felix, and his shutout game in which he struck out 7 went to waste.

The Ugly

Remember when Joba Chamberlain was amazing in relief? A real assett to have in late games to get the ball to Mo. This season a 5.79 ERA pitching out of the bullpen would seem to suggest that we may need to reconsider our setup approach. Its very hard to find consistant relievers, and when you do, you typically turn them into closers. I'm not saying that Chamberlain is a lost cause or anything, but while he figures out how to get hitters out again, maybe we shouldn't lean on him so much in the later innings of close games.

Respect Jeter's Gangster is for the Children

As mentioned in the good section, the Yankees hit 4 homeruns this weekend, 2 by Teixeira, one by Swisher, and one by Thames. A good weekend for the children.

On another note, the Children's Health Fund raffle closes on Tuesday! Make a donation to the Children's Health Fund and let them know you were referred by the RJG blog, and you will be entered into the raffle for 2 tickets to the August 7 game between the Yankees and Red Sox.
