Yankees Split Series With Kansas City

The Good

The Yankee offense came to life yesterday.  12 hits, 10 runs, 3 homeruns from Cano, Swisher and A-Rod, and most promising of all, a solid start out of Hughes who went 6.2 innings, allowed 3 runs and struck out 7.  It was just the kind of game the offense needed, and we can only hope they'll carry it forward.

The Bad

Saturday's game.  The Yankees lost 5-1 with the one run scoring on a Russell Martin homer.  Through Saturday, it just looked like the Yankees were swinging their bats under water.  Especially the trio of boppers that are supposed to make up the heart of our lineup. Cano, Teixeira and A-Rod have struggled to find consistancy, which is a shame considering our lead off man is batting .397 and has a .439 on base percentage.

The Ugly

The Yankees made Felipe Paulino look like Nolan Ryan.  This is a guy with a career ERA over 5.

The Babies Still Got Some Money

Whether they win or lose, the Yankees can still help save humanity through their homerun hitting efforts.  Over the weekend, Russell Martin, Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher and Alex Rodriguez each hit a homerun to net $8 for the Children's Health Fund.

Raul Ibanez 3hr = $6
Nick Swisher 7hr = $14
Andruw Jones 3hr = $6
Derek Jeter 5hr = $10
Curtis Granderson 9hr = $18
Alex Rodriguez 5hr = $10
Robinson Cano 2hr = $4
Mark Teixeira 4hr = $8
Eric Chavez 3hr = $6
Russell Martin 3hr = $6

Total 44hr = $88

Did you see the insane 17 inning Orioles-Red Sox game? Looks like Valentine was wrong about the Sox having hit bottom.

I'm beginning to feel sorry for the Soxs, and I have never liked them. What is happening to me? I'm a Yankees fan and the definition of a Yankees fan is the hatred of the Soxs, right?

No, the definition of the Yankees is winning, and that's always stood separate from our hatred of the Red Sox. However, its never fun to win against a team that's down and out. That's why you feel sorry for them.

And I caught part of that game Rich, though I didn't see where Darnell McDonald gave up the runs!

It would have been tough to stick with that entire game, it was over six hours long! Poor McDonald, he gave up the game-winning runs and then grounded into the game-ending double play. Chris Davis pitched two scoreless innings despite not having pitched since junior college in 2006.

It was the first time both teams in a MLB game had used position players to pitch since 1925. Those players were Ty Cobb and George Sisler.

I don't feel sorry for the Red Sox because of all the hype about the 2011 team, followed by the organization's mistreatment of Francona, plus the team having three players I can't stand (Beckett, Lackey and Youkilis).

In other news, I was at Pettitte's AAA start in Rochester yesterday. Keeping in mind that the defense behind him was dreadful, he wasn't pitching like he's the answer to the Yankees' pitching problems.

Yeah I'm getting that same feeling about Pettitte. At least right now. I don't know that he's ready for major league hitters yet, even though he insists that he is, despite giving up multiple runs to 19 year old prospects not named Bryce Harper.

At one point Pettitte walked in a run, I think with Jose Iglesias batting. It might have been a different batter, I don't want to believe that Pettitte walked Jose Iglesias with the bases loaded.

Are you sure it wasn't Latin singing-sensation Julio Iglesias? Because Pettitte might have been star-struck, and walked him out of respect.

Perhaps you're right. The Red Sox are very thin on shortstops.
