The Brian Cashman School of Negotiation

Peter Abraham is reporting on his blog that the Yankees and Robinson Cano may be close to a 4 year deal worth $30M. As had previously reported the Yankees had submitted an arbitration offer of $3.2M while Cano was asking for $4.55M. Clearly, $7.5M/yr for four years is the middle ground between those two figures.

Not that I'm against signing Cano to a "long" term deal, I think that is in the best interest of the Yankees, it's just that it strikes me as an odd negotiation ploy to offer to pay the guy more than he's asking.
