Jeter Vouches for Chacon

Shawn Chacon was officially let go by the Astro's following an incident where he attacked his general manager. Chacon admitted to the attack and explained that he choked and threw down his GM, before other players broke it up. According to Tyler Kepner's blog, Derek Jeter would vouch for Shawn Chacon's character if he were to come to the Yankees. Here's the quote from the blog:

“Chac’s a friend of mine,” Jeter said. “I see Chac in the off-season. I wouldn’t have a problem with him. I think people need to find out all the details. Yeah, it doesn’t look good, doesn’t sound good, but I don’t know what happened. I can’t picture it happening, knowing him like I know him.”

Jeter also went on to explain that it may have been a misunderstanding between Chacon or "Chac" as Jeter calls him, and the GM.

"Here in the Yankee clubhouse, we like to wrestle a lot. We play a game where we go up to a teammate and choke slam them when they least expect it. Its a lot of fun. Just ask Pavano."

Chacon who spent parts of his 2005 and 2006 season with the Yankees, remembered the game, and wanted to try and play it with his new GM.

"We'll just say that the GM lost that round." Concluded Jeter.

Although the Yankees have found someone to vouch for Chacon, they are still searching for someone to vouch for Sydney Ponson.

Isnt Pavano supposed to be coming back soon? Not that it matters, he will probably sneeze and go back on the DL anyway.

I just don't think anyone's realistically expecting him to come back and pitch. Not to mention, the guy has pitched 2 games in the last 3 years. I just don't know how effective he'll be.

hes appearently going to come back in august.. wouldnt surprise me if the man had two good starts and tricked someone into signing him

You know Quinn, that's a good point. He's out of a contract after this year, and needs someone dumb enough to sign him. The only way he'll get that is if he throws a couple good games and shows he can still pitch at this level. With starting pitching at a premium, you can bet someone will take the risk on him.

I'd sign him all over again if he helped us win a world series.

As for Chacon, if Jeter says he's good, then that's good enough for me. Now, if he continues to put up terrible numbers, that's another story.

The fantastic Mr. Carl Pavano back on the mound?
Oh, yes, and the Giants might just give Zito up for free.
Just sign Chacon. With him and Krazy Kyle in the bull pen, the Yankees will be the World Champion of Bench-Clearing Brawl.

That has more value than most baseball analysts are willing to give.

I don't think Chacon is the answer, though I didn't Ponson was an answer either. The good thing with these starters is that they cost us little, and you never know if they might catch fire.
