The Rangers have signed early retirement case waiting to happen, Vladimir Guerrero, to a one year deal worth about $5M. Cadillac Winchester, the Texas Rangers GM, has explained that the Rangers will no longer waste time developing young players just to see them sign elsewhere later.
"We've tried the get younger, cheaper, more athletic approach. It didn't work. Moneyball? More like waste of Moneyball. We've decided that our best bet is to get older, less athletic, less healthy, and more expensive. If this doesn't work, we'll probably just give up."
This RJG reporter thinks they already have.

Eh they have a pretty good young pitching staff that they're bringing up. They were pretty good last year until everyone got hurt. Vlad can still hit.
I still think the Angels will win the West, though. Screw them. >:( Seriously, though...
Mariners: ooh they got Figgins and Cliff Lee. They still have no freaking offense other than the headcase that is Milton Bradley.
Rangers: are cursed to either never make the playoffs or get kicked out by the Yankees. It seems like they just can't stay fully healthy, at all. And IIRC their bullpen is a truly scary place.
A's: awful.

Funny, that's the same voicemail message Cadillac left me earlier today.
It will be interesting to see how the West plays out, but the one thing that this offseason seems to have solidified is that there is no longer a really dominant team out there. Even if the Angels turn out to be the best in that division, they don't currently seem like a team you'd worry about facing anymore.
Granted, not one game has been played, so we'll just have to see what happens.

I'd worry about them because they're the f-ing Angels and they could beat the Yankees in Anaheim if their team consisted of a bunch of 80-year-old men with one leg. And by signing Matsui, they just got closer to that, actually. (BA-DUM-CHING.)
