Mark McGwire Admits Steroid Use

The world learned yesterday what the world already knew: Mark McGwire used steroids throughout his career. Though all of us seemingly already knew that, the admission did take one person by surprise: Mark McGwire.

"I was kind of shocked to hear the admission." Explained the former Cardinals first baseman. "I mean I always suspected that I used steroids but was never sure. I saw myself before the congressional hearing, and I was like 'Man, I sound guilty.' but even then there wasn't smoking gun proof that I used. Then I came out and admitted it, and I finally realized that I used throughout my career."

Asked to elaborate, Mark continued.

"Well throughout the late 90's I was saying that I was on Creatine, and it made sense, but then I hit 70 homeruns, and I had to think that there's no way I was only using creatine. Then the Mitchell Report came out and I wasn't in it, so I thought maybe I didn't use, but then I thought back to my Oakland days and the vived memories of Jose Canseco jabbing needles filled with steroids into my butt, and I thought, boy I'm guilty, but I still had my doubts. Maybe it was creatine in those needles. Maybe it was flax seed oil or vitamin B12. Then when I admitted it last night, I finally realized that I did use steroids. Its crazy because I was my favorite player throughout the 90's, and now I feel like I let me down. My second favorite player, Derek Jeter, is now my favorite of all time."

I couldn't believe he said that he definitely would have had the same numbers if he hadn't used PED's. That irked me. But then I got over it. Then it bothered me again. Then I got a little hungry and had a sandwich.

The important question is, what kind of sandwich?

Oh, I definitely think he could have hit .260 even without steroids.
I kept wondering why, if he was so sure they didn't affect his performance or numbers, he thought he needed to aplogise? Did he think anybody didn't already know?
I think he buried himself deeper than he did in Washington.
"To get over injuries" huh?
Jeez. With a few well timed shots, The Mick wold have wound up .350/800 lifetime. Maybe 1000Hr's by the time he retired in 1980
(Not that he wouldn't have if he had the opportunity)
Leave the sandwitch stuff out. I'll be in there in a second.

I just hope Jeets and Mo didn't use. That's all I really care about at this point. Oh, and Maddux.

Yeah, there's I'm hoping never used PED's inlcuding those you mentioned, Posada, Delgado and Pujols.

And Joe you're right. The Mick was injured basically from his rookie season on to the day he retired.

Yeah, I'm hoping Posada's not on the list. That said, he'd be the Yankee that would least surprise me, frankly. But I love him and I really want him in the Hall of Fame, and if he was on something, he has NO chance.

The Pujols frenzy if he did steroids (or was lying about his age) would be hilarious. That said, I'll be sad if he did steroids.

I'd die of happiness if Curt Schilling used.

I would love it if Jeter popped positive (no offense, guys) only because I can guarantee sportswriters would collectively fall over each other trying to make excuses for him. I think it would be rather amusing seeing the differnce in how they would handle the story, as opposed to McGwire.

Why is everyone acting shocked anyway? Didnt we know he took in 98? Isnt Andro a steroid?

Andro is not a steroid, but is often taken as a steroid precursor (is my understanding). We've already seen what happens when a likable guy tests positive: David Ortiz. A-Rod and McGwire have both been criticized for admitting steroid use but not being truthful "enough" while Papi had a press conference in which he denied doing anything wrong, was baby sat by the MLBPA pres, and everyone (that I saw anyway) said, "well, he probably didn't mean to take anything, it must've been over the counter or something."

andro is a steroid, i looked it up. Let me play Devils Advocate. Would you take steroids, if it let you make millions of dollars and get mad women? I can say for a fact I know I would. Most people would, if it would improve their job performance. Am I advocating steroid use? No. Can I understand it? Yes. Am I terrible at articulating my points? Yes

One question. By "mad women," do you mean a lot of women, or women that are completely off their rocker? Because if it's the latter, I'm not sure it's worth it.

Roberto E. Alejandro said...

Where did you see that andro was a steroid? All I have found is that it is a hormone precursor to testosterone, but that it is not an anabolic steroid (based on wikipedia and bodybuilding.com articles, hardly the best sources).

I had to go old school to find it. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=186

And yes, I have an unhealthy taste for insane women.

In case you forgot, chicks dig the long ball:

That's the thing that is lost in all this. That '98 home run chase made baseball matter again nationally. Hence you get a nike campaign the next year about how chicks dig the long ball. It restored baseball as the national pastime after declining interest since the '94 strike.

We can dislike steroids all we want, but in '98, baseball needed it.

new video blog should be up later today w/ a few comments about McGwire.

He said the bare minimum necessary to return to baseball as a coach. The end. The guy is probably so deep in denial that he will never come clean with himself, let alone the media.
