Sabathia Not Sharp, Yankees Lose

The Good

I think its always a good sign when your pitcher doesn't have his best stuff and can still battle through 7 innings of a start. He gave up 4 runs, but that's typically not enough to bury the Yankees. Well, it was last night, but you get what I'm saying. Teixeira hit a homerun, and Posada had a pair of hits bringing his average up to a robust .167.

The Bad

Brad Penny allowed just one unearned run over 6 innings, and did so after a 23-pitch first inning. Being controlled by the post-Dodgers era Brad Penny is an insult.

The Ugly

Austin Jackson went 2-5 while Curtis Granderson went 0-4. If you only use that sample size, then clearly this was a terrible trade idea and Cashman should be ashamed.

$ for Babies

Mark Teixeira hit a homerun to donate a total of $2 from the RJG. We're hoping for a little more today.

Mark Teixeira 8hr = $16
Curtis Granderson 8hr = $16
Russell Martin 6hr = $12
Alex Rodriguez 5hr = $10
Jorge Posada 6hr = $12
Robinson Cano 8hr = $16
Andruw Jones 1hr = $2
Brett Gardner 3hr = $6
Nick Swisher 1hr = $2
Total = $92

You could say that Cashman should be ashamed of the Granderson-Jackson trade. You could, but you are a blogger, not a columnist for a tabloid newspaper or a radio talk-show host.

You have to make unreasonable assertions for the job you want, not the job you have.

Exaclty.

Granderson and Swisher have to be some of the best trades of Cashman's career. We'll have to wait until the end of the season to properly assess the Freddy Garcia, Bartolo Colon, Russell Martin, Eric Chavez and Andruw Jones signings, but so far they're looking pretty smart.

Soriano and Arias (who?) for ARod, plus a good chunk of ARod's salary, is still Cashman's best trade. It's one of the best trades ever made.

A bunch of guys nobody remembers for Abreu was also good.

Considering that they cost virtually nothing and have already made solid contributions, Garcia, Colon and Chavez have already turned out to be good moves.

Russell Nathan Coltrane Jeanson Martin (really?) has already earned much of his $4 million salary, especially considering that the Yankees had absolutely no decent alternatives at catcher.

Jones, at worst, will be another Randy Winn: a guy who doesn't contribute, but doesn't get enough playing time or make enough money to really hurt the team. At best, he will be a fourth OF who hits home runs, which is fairly valuable.

We agree that the Rafael Soriano signing was crazy. The moves that Cashman actually made were solid and cost the team very little.

The best still boils down to the Swisher deal though. Wilson Betemit for Nick Swisher can't be beat!

Bete who?

Hahaha, nice try but Wilson Betemit had 276 at bats last season, and 45 the season before. Swisher's an every day player. You just can't compare the two. Good luck in Kansas though.
