The Yankees Take Another Series After Losing the First Game

The Good

The Yanks have won every series against an AL East opponent this season, despite losing the first game each time. Burnett was nasty, going 8 innings and allowing 0 runs. He struck out the last batter he faced on three pitches. Of course, the story of the game was Robinson Cano. He somehow managed to go 7 for 5, with two home runs, a double, the most amazing defensive play in the second inning, and delivering two babies between innings.

The Bad

I can't be sure, but I think Teixeira is currently possessed by Dr. Sam Beckett from Quantum Leap. It would explain why he's not hitting. I just hope Sam figures out what he's leapt here to do soon so we can get the Teixeira back who knows how to hit.

The Ugly

In the bottom of the first inning, Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz became irate, throwing his glove in the dugout, knocking over a water cooler, and yelling out towards the field. RJG caught up with Matusz to find out why he was so upset.

"So I'm in the dugout, and I look up and Burnett is on the mound," Matusz explained. "The mound. He walked right up to it and stepped on the rubber. That's my mound! I know he's the more accomplished player, but you don't just step on someone's mound in the middle of the game. I may not be on his radar, but now he knows I'm there. It's just like he doesn't respect me and he doesn't respect the game!"

The Cano Show

Cano had two more home runs today. He now leads the Majors in ridiculousness.

Posada 5hr = $5
Granderson 2hr = $2
Cano 8hr = $8
Swisher 2hr = $2
Jeter 3hr = $3
Johnson 1hr = $1
Rodriguez 2hr = $2
Teixeira 2hr = $2
Thames 1hr = $1
Total = $26

Wow. A nearly-instantaneous game wrap, with a revealing and insightful interview to boot. Now THAT'S journalism. Pay attention, Sports Illustrated.

Woot. Nice to see you on Twitter, too.

Cano...ridiculous doesn't even begin to describe his performance today.

But Pedroia is still better, right? /sarcasm

Robbie Cano has had a memorable April.

His 21 runs, 33 hits, .407 AVG, .790 SLG, 1.235 OPS, and 64 total bases each lead the league. He has a .444 OBP. I think only Konerko has more HR (10 to Robbie's 8). And there's one April game left!

Pedroia is having a very good April (.293/.330/.543, 5 HR and 16 RBI) but it's obviously not a Robbie Cano April.

Fangraphs highlighted this execrable article by Gregg Doyel about the Howard extension. (Doyel, like Ringolsby, is another writer I had never heard of before, and has succeeded in his goal of getting more attention by writing something idiotic and inflammatory.) I disagree with Doyel's premise that anyone who dislikes the Howard extension is stupid, but I link the article here because of this gem buried within it:

"Jayson Werth ... becomes a free agent after this season but who, I am guessing, will be back. Why? Because the Phillies are the Yankees or the Red Sox of the National League, and Werth strikes me as a winner. Winners don't leave winners. Alex Rodriguez isn't a winner, which is why he left Seattle after a 91-win season in 2000 for the Rangers. A-Rod is a capitalist. Werth is a winner. Big difference."

Doyel might have outdone Ringolsby here on the moron scale. Ringolsby merely wrote ARod showed disrespect for baseball for accepting a $252 million contract. Doyel says that ARod is a LOSER for going to the Rangers ten years ago. This is the same ARod who was willing to accept a pay cut to go to the Red Sox, and who, if memory serves, was a key part in winning the World Series last year.

If I showed this kind of disregard for facts in my work, I would be fired.

Great Quantum Leap pull.

Just don't become the Kitty Kelly of Journalism.

Good to see you on Twitter too, Lady Gaganonymous.

Wow. That's an insane quote. Write an article about the Phillies, take a shot at A-Rod. Who's the loser?
