Papelbon Controversy

This happened a little bit ago, but I thought I'd discuss it now. Recently Papelbon said he would be willing to sign with the Yankees once a free agent. Then the next day, Epstein made him say he loves Boston and would never play for the Yankees. But the thing is, what Papelbon said was, he'd go to the highest bidder. And you know what? He's right to say that, and if that bidder is the Yankees (please no, one fist pumper is enough), he should sign with New York. I don't get why fans think a player owes it to stay with their team even if management doesn't want to pay them fair market. I'm hardly a laissez-faire type, but the teams make money on players they don't pay fairly prior to free agency, so I don't blame a player for being a "mercenary" when free agent time comes around. They're free agents. They're supposed to sign with whoever pays them the most, that's the whole point.

I agree that players have the right to make as much money as they can. But I really hope that Papelbon does not become a Yankee. I admit (grudgingly) that he is a great closer. But as far as class he is a huge step down from Mo.

I'll take Joakim Soria before I take Papelbon.

But what if the Yankees sign Papelbon, and then Posada beats him up on the first day of spring training? I'd be okay with that.

The Papelbon issue aside, how would you feel if Jeter went to the highest bidder? Not good, I guarantee you. I guess we'll find out next year.

i will bet my life that jeter is going nowhere. the yankees will pay to keep him around. i dont think he will get a texeria type contract, but i cant imagine him playing for anyone else

Hopefully the Yanks would be the highest bidder for Jeter. And for Paplebon, too as I would love to see Posada and him beefing on the mound.

the yankees will pay jeter after next year. I dont think they could deal with the public backlash that would happen if he went to another team.

guys like DJ and chipper jones are loved for their "alliegence'..although loyalty might not be the only thing holding jeet in NY i do believe that thats where he's going to to retire..and if you wanna look at it from a money stand point, I think that he would make more money being a yankee, because that noterioty of being a yankee legend still in formation is so appeling. He's an authentic yankee, and thats a title papelbon can never approch..in fact hes the exact opposite of that.

Honestly, while I wouldn't like it, I wouldn't hold it against Jeter for not leaving money on the table. I wouldn't see him as any less great of a Yankee. If he walks b/c of money, that's on the Yanks, not Jeter.

Posada wont even be around by the time the Yankees have a chance to sign Pabelbon
