Yanks Sweep the Sox

The Good

Brian Cashman has Girardi-proofed the Yankees. Back to Back home runs by Damon and Teixeira in the bottom of the eighth, plus an additional two-run cushion thanks to Nick Swisher, saved the Yankees from a terrible decision by Girardi in the top of the eighth. Oh yeah, having Mariano Rivera as your closer helps too.

The Bad

With a one-run game on the line, Girardi decided to have Phil Coke pitch the eighth inning, even though Phil Hughes has only faced two hitters in the last two games. As soon as I saw Coke in, I thought to myself, "This guy is okay, but he tends to give up home runs. Where is Hughes?" Sure enough, Coke served up a two-run bomb to Victor Martinez, obliterating Andy Pettitte's win. Thanks for that Girardi.

The Ugly

Every time Jason Varitek catches a pitch he thinks, "Oh man, my replacement is over at first base." Also ugly, tonight's winning pitcher was Phil Coke. That's bull$#!%.

With VMart being a switch hitter that was quite a few righties for Coke to face. I wonder if Hughes was pretty much unavailable from two consecutive days of work. I know he only threw a few pitches, but it's still getting warm and coming in. It seems like he's getting treated like he is somewhere between a starter and a reliever as far as how stretched out he is. He can't go more than a couple innings and he can't go multiple days in a row. His arm is worth some caution. He's looked pretty special lately.

He has, but you'd think he can throw in a game when he's only thrown nine pitches in the previous two, even with the warm-ups. Maybe they're being (over) cautious, as seems to be the trend. It's probably smart but frustrating when that means you leave a guy with a 4.7 ERA in to face one of the American League's better hitters.

I don't like the idea of Hughes pitching 5 of 6 games, regardless of pitches thrown.
Hughes wasn't available tonight

See, I don't agree. Hughes should have been available. What was it 8 or 9 pitches over two days plus warm up tosses? I think he could manage one inning of work. Phil Coke was a mistake to have out there. At least after Ellsbury. That should have been the only batter he faced.

I actually found Joe Morgan bearable last night, I wanted to punch the other two in the face.
