Is Abreu a Deficient Outfielder?

The short answer is yes, but luckily, our "Respect Jeter's Gangster" blog team had compiled a list of possible reasons Abreu doesn't dive for balls or run into walls in the outfield back in January. Hopefully this list helps you understand his deficiency better.

10 Possible Reasons for why Bobby Abreu Won't Dive for a Ball, or Run into a padded fence to get an Out:

1. He used to get spanked for getting grass stains on his shirt.
2. His childhood baseball field was lined with an electric fence.
3. His childhood field had no fence, and is now intimidated by their presence.
4. There were snakes on the field he played in.
5. There were rocks and rock scorpions on the field he played in.
6. One time he ran right through a fence while following a fly ball not realizing it was the fence to the local prison. He inadvertently sprung 200 convicts into his community.
7. He's been taking advice from Carl Pavano.
8. Bobby once made a beautiful diving catch but didn't see that his puppy had wandered onto the field to play with him. The catch was beautiful, but the puppy never saw him coming. He vouched to never dive again.
9. Bobby once hopped a fence only to see his neighbor sun bathing in the nude. He was so traumatized he never went near a fence again.
10. He dives when he wants to. Respect his gangster.

11. Probably realizes that he is more valuble on the field, rather than crashing into a wall and injuring himself (Like Aaron Rowand, now thats a gamer), and sitting on the bench making $16 million.

that's the main argument ppl use to defend abreu, and I can see not running into walls. But he won't dive in the middle of the outfield. he doesn't play on turf so that's not the issue. You're lucky to get him to slide for a ball. that's what is frustrating.

i think he got hurt or something once. thats the only logical thing. but its ok. i respect his gangster at the plate. and i agree with fred trigger.. but i would like to see him show a little more effort.. and cano is coming around,(which is good because not only his he the second basemen for my favorite team but also my fantasy team). Igawa and Rasner this weekend. God help us

fair enough, I'll buy that. I think its crazy for people to complain that he tries not to throw himself into a wall. i mean, running into walls is what shortened Fred Lynns career.

I like Abreu and completely respect his gangster at the plate! That's why I gave it a month of watching every game to form an opinion. It's not about running into walls. He appears almost lazy when even having to chase a flyball, and it is frustrating! Career ending plays are one thing, but these guys are making alot of money to play ball offensively and defensively. If you're afraid to field for fear of hurting yourself, then apply to be the DH!! Anyway, it's been bugging me, so thanks for bringing up the discussion!

Quinn - you should have replaced Cano on your fantasy team a long time ago! There are way too many second baseman hitting better...I feel good about Igawa and Rasner. We have Detroit and they're a mess. Yeah, they swept us last time, but they are streaky and have so many internal issues and we've settled down some and are in a decent groove with our bullpen.

haha, those are really funny. I read them out loud to my roommate, who doesn't know anything about Bobby and she laughed out loud!

Well, let's look at it this way.
If he dives and breaks his finger,
the Yankees, with both A-Rod and Posada on DL, will be in living hell. We all love Shelley, but he's not Bobby Abreu.

EEEKKK, we're gonna just have to agree to disagree on this one. There's no way I can look at it that way. I respect Jeter's gangster - 100% every day, every play! Besides, he's been playing like this since day one - before either of these guys went on the DL. It's one thing to be a less than stellar player if you are giving it your all, but clearly he's not giving 100% in the field, and that's not OK. If he's that worried about hurting himself, DH him for his bat and speed if he feels the need to be protected (gimmie a break!) and find some young stud from the farm system that will chase everything in site and catch it!

You mean Lassie?
And somebody told me that Cliff Lee is possessed by Lord Voldemort...

Cliff Lee could have creepy purple eyes and speak in tongues for all I care - just keep up that pitching!!!!

And come to think of it, Lassie COULD do a better job catching balls in RF!!!!

Igawa tonight i believe.. i dont like this... and tribegirl.. if he can get out of this slump and start being the old robbie cano, i can live with that .. also i really do think that somewhere down the line he was hurt diving for a ball and is scared of doing it again. and the only reason is, most outfielders will dive not a single hesitation. hell the fragile jd drew would dive every once and a while i think he really had a scarring incident. anyway. go yanks lets hope the tigers keep playing like they did against boston. by the way.. was papelbon showing up his shortstop the other night by kicking that water cooler... thats not good. mo doesnt do that thank god.

Here is my thought on the matter. I'm not saying Abreu needs to kill himself out there, I'm just saying that I've seen too many balls drop within diving distance that he pulls up on and catches on the rebound. Also, its not like he needs to run into a wall on a daily basis, just that there are certain plays he could make that right now he doesn't. Not to mention, the walls are padded. Its not like Aaron Rowand running face first into that chain linked fence....though I respect his gangster for it.

If we have players who are afraid of injuries, than they're in the wrong line of work. People get injured running to first (Jeter & A-Rod) or throwing a ball (Posada), injuries come, its apart of the game. But I can understand the argument that without A-Rod and Posada, you probably don't want to lose a guy like Abreu.

I'm excited to see what Rasner can do his second time out. I've been interested in Rasner since we claimed him off waivers from the Nationals. I hope he does well.

I also hope Igawa does well, but I have less faith in that. I went to 4 games at Yankee stadium last season, 1 pitched by Rasner, and the rest pitched by Igawa. What are the chances that you would pick 3 random games and they would all be pitched by the number 5 guy?

Lastly, Amanda, I'm glad you and your roommate liked them! We posted those back in January when no one used to visit our site. We got 0 comments on that post. Today I log in and we got 12. I'm glad the blog's comming of age.

mo is one of the classiest individuals on the planet, papelbon considerably less so. And I'm not just saying that b/c he plays for boston, but the way he handled his contract extension was not very professional. Anyway, Quinn may have the best theory on this one. Some sort of trauma may be the only way to explain it. My brother's puppy theory isn't bad either. In any event, he has to dive. In fairness, I don't know that he's ever cost us a game w/ his defensive play, but it's probably a matter of time.

joba fist pumping... offensive?

TribeGirl said...

It depends how a player does it. When Joba does it - he's not looking at the player or the other team's bench like "HA!" being a bad sport or a jerk. It's just true emotion, so that's OK. Now John Rocker (remember him?), his was taunting the other team, so I found that offensive and unsportsmanlike.
