Mighty Mets Toppled By Softball Girls

Its difficult for a professional baseball player to call another teams players "softball girls" when said softball girls just scored 6 runs off of you. But that did not stop the ever classy Nelson Figueroa after yesterday's game with the Nationals. Figueroa was upset that they were cheering and celebrating in the dugout as they went on to beat the Mets yesterday. I guess cheering from the dugout can be added to fist pumps as things baseball players shouldn't do. Here are some quotes from the article:

"They were cheerleading in the dugout like a bunch of softball girls,"

"If that's what a last-place team needs to do to fire themselves up, so be it. They need to show a little more class and professionalism."

"They won tonight, but in the long run they are still who they are,"

"Even for the manager and the coaching staff to let that stuff carry on, it's truly unprofessional."

They are who they are...a last place team, that much is true. And I suppose you could say that the Mets are who they are...a 3rd place team with a huge chip placed on their collective shoulders by Philadelphia last season. Let the kids have their fun. If they're truely not a threat to you then why take issue with it?

Help me out here - what's wrong with cheering in the dugout after you win? Did something supercrazy happen? What did I miss???? I don't really follow the NL so not to sure what's going on there...

actually, something super crazy did happen. After a 20 minute choreographed dance number the nats burnt an effigy of Nelson Figueroa and then slaughtered a pig over the ashes. They then kicked the pig all the while screaming, "kick the pig like we kicked Nelson." Of course, what Figueroa didn't understand was that the Nats team soccer ball (they can only afford one with their payroll) is also named Nelson on account of they would be sued if they called it Wilson.

Sounds ok to me - just some normal after the game fun. But then again consideer I did grow up in Cleveland, I was a cheerleader, AND a softball girl... (and just used an ellipsis)

Although here in these parts we wouldn't have wasted the pig, we would've had a good ole pig roast when we were done kicking it!!!

i suspect... he had a different word in his mind when he said "softball girls." it is funny.. he was sorta careful but it is still politically incorrect. this is a sad world, isn't it? are there any politically correct words to express one's frustration?

if i take this story literally, since figueroa was the one who got "L" on his record as a pitcher for that game.. making fun of those "L" people in public is simply not the right thing to do. it is MLB, not XXXXX, you don't call losers, "loser." for me there is a distinct line. being politically incorrect is fine for me but calling losers(or people who got hurt) loser is bad.

Aaahhhhh....see, that's why I stick with the American League. Sometimes I get caught up in Manny's world, get confused when pitchers hit, or am slow to get the double meanings of those announcer folks that don't have the balls to just say it!

Announcer, coach, player, whoever...see? I'm still all dorked up with this story. Screw it, it's the NL.
