What Just Occured?

The Good

5 Yankees had two hit games, including Cano, who hit a double and a single and knocked in a run. Giambi hit his 7th homerun of the season. The Yankees did come back from a 6-1 deficit to lose 6-5, which I suppose counts for something......or nothing, I don't know. Albaladejo-Hawkins-Ramirez combined for 6 innings of scoreless relief with 4 strikeouts.

The Bad

3 errors in a game we lost by one run is not good. Not to mention that Albaladejo came out injured after pitching a pretty good 2.1 innings of relief. Chris Britton will be called back up. This is just a thought here, but perhaps the Yankees should use him? No?

The Ugly

Eventually you need to concede that you threw away $46 million. Its not anything new really. Remember Carl Pavano? I'm just saying that Igawa doesn't have it. Trade him to the National League where he might have a chance to succeed. Send him to the Nationals, they seem to find a way to get good results from these kind of players. All I'm saying is I don't ever want to see Igawa pitch for the Yankees again. If all of a sudden he picks up a 95 mph fastball, then I might be interested, but until then Scranton seems to be a good home for him.

Respect Jeter's Gangster is for the Children

The "Respect Jeter's Gangster" blog joined Johnny Damon's homerun club, which raises money for the Children's Health Fund. We are pledged to donate $1.00 for every homerun the Yankees hit this season. We will keep a running tally of the homeruns hit and the money donated throughout the season. Giambi hit his 7th jack of the season to pass Cabrera for the team lead. Good for him:

Melky Cabrera 6hr = $6.00
Alex Rodriguez 4hr = $4.00
Hideki Matsui 3 hr = $3.00
Bobby Abreu 4hr = $4.00
Jorge Posada 1hr = $1.00
Jason Giambi 7hr = $7.00
Johnny Damon 5hr = $5.00
Morgan Ensberg 1hr = $1.00
Robinson Cano 4hr = $4.00
Chad Moeller 1hr = $1.00
Wilson Betemit 1hr = $1.00
Total = $37.00

Has anyone else noticed the defense on the left side of the infield has been less than stellar??? Not just last night, but there are missed balls every night counted for hits that ARod would have gotten. Everyone is so focused on his bat back in the lineup - heck we need his glove!!!!
P.S. The error by Jeter that was changed to a hit. The Detroit announcers couldn't believe that it was charged as an error when they first did it! It was definitely legit that they changed it to a hit...
P.S.S. Yes, I pay a crapload of attention to defense in baseball. Why I have no idea.

The NY announcers also couldn't believe it when that hit was initially scored an error. The My9 broadcast (the local NY channel that usually broadcasts friday night games) showed Jeter's face when the E6 went on the score board and he shook his head a little and said 'wow.' He couldn't believe it either, and they were right to change it. That and I'm sure they were scared of Jeter's gangster when they saw his reaction.

I feel the need to update either the bad or the ugly. Betemit's defense at third was horrendous. I realize he's not a third baseman to begin with, but he cannot be left there, especially with a pitcher he seems to get taken to the left side of the field. There were at least three missed plays in the third inning that should've been made, and that would've been made by a competent third basemen. Igawa didn't pitch well, he was still too high in the strike zone. On the other hand, he pitched better than his final line indicated in large part b/c Betemit missed a number of plays that resulted in runs. Ensberg should've been out there playing third. Is he A-Rod? No, but he's better than Betemit and probably makes at least two of those missed plays.

speaking of which, i used to think that one thing both yankee fans and mets fans could agree with was.. our (mets)radio broadcasters were much much better than the yankees'. i was listening to the yankee game last night. yea you guys still have awful broadcasters. but now.. our broadcasters are a joke. i think that people do not take seriously about radio broadcasting anymore. our murphy-cohen was so good. even when i had a cable, i was listening. especially howie rose was on tv. unlike all other new comers, radio is still the one for baseball.. i believe.

With Kei Igawa on the mound and Wilson Betemit at third, we should be grateful that the Yankees lost the game only by ONE run.
