A-Rod Out for 10 Weeks?

A report from ESPN deportes is saying that A-Rod needs to get his cyst operated immediately and that he would need to be out the next 10 weeks, making him miss the first month of the season. The articles source is A-Rod's brother, Joe Rodriguez. Now, I don't know how true this is, since ESPN deportes reported earlier in the winter that the Yankees were close to signing Manny Ramirez for 3 years and $75 million, which turned out to be false. However, they claim to have gotten the information from A-Rod's brother, which would lend some credibility. We'll have to see how this turns out.

4:31 Update: According to Peter Abraham, A-Rod will not need surgery as the Yankees hope he can get by with rest and rehabilitation. A-Rod has a torn hip labrum as well as a cyst. He will have the cyst drained, which will hopefully remove the tightness he's been feeling, but Cashman said that he will need to have the surgery eventually and that the surgery will require 4 months of recovery. The Yankees want to try and pass A-Rod through the season, and then have him get the surgery in the off season.

For some perspective, Mike Lowell had a partially torn hip labrum, and had a rough season last year, but not so bad that he was useless. He missed some time with an oblique strain in August, but had been dealing with the hip problem for 3 months prior to that. He was later taken off the ALDS roster because of the hip injury, but for the season was able to play over 100 games and get 419 at bats despite the time he missed with the oblique injury. The torn hip labrum hobbled him, but he was still able to play with it, and though his numbers suffered, he was still able to perform (.274 average, 17 homeruns, 73 RBI's). We'll see what comes of A-Rod, but Cody should be taking some grounders at third just in case.

Ugh. It's always something with this guy. So what do people think? Do we go out and trade for a third baseman or do we let Cody Ransom and Angel Berrao (I don't know his last name, sorry) battle it out to be a replacement for a few months?

I feel kind of bad for Alex. From what I read he was very excited to be playing for the Dominican team, fulfilling his mother's wish and all. His 2009 isn't going all that great so far.

I say let Cody play. For one month, he'll do, and we don't want to panic this early. Let's hold our trading chips for the deadline. As for Berroa, just trust that don't want him batting every day in your lineup. I used to watch him when he was with Kansas City. He has a Vlad Guerrero strike zone with an Adam Dunn strikeout rate. Its hard to watch.

I agree...I think Cody will do just fine at 3rd base for a few weeks. Cody impressed me during the last few games of the season, and Angel Berroa didnt really stand out during the exhibition games..wasn't he the one who got that error during the game agianst Team usa?...he did somethingt, like messed up a play, or dropped the ball..but still cody's got my vote.....

and i am curious..do first baseman's transition well to third base? I mean Shelley Duncans been impressing this ST, and Nick Swisher expressed his disappointment over not being at his fav position (1st).....but do you think the yankees would fair all that bad if one of them took over...maybe uyse the next coupel of EXB. games to get aquianted with that side of the diamond??

i nono, i guess its just wishful thinking...tryna mix it up.

Damn those steroids. All kidding aside, hopefully Alex will have a speedy and complete recovery. Or even better the Yanks will cruise along in first place without him. Is Aaron Boone available?

Is it just me or does anyone else think it is ludicrous that Ca$h would consider letting him try to play out the season with this injury? Lowell lasted 4 months last year and then was useless down the stretch. Do we really want to entertain the possibility of Rod going down in July and having to make a trade for another third baseman when the going value will be the highest? Shutting him down now and getting him back in July to mash the rest of the season seems to make so much more sense.

Reverend, I actually agree with that. I think it would be a huge boost to get a healthy A-Rod in July, then to get a hobbled A-Rod now. Unfortunately, it looks like we'll have the hobbled option
