Chan Ho Park
announced today that he has agreed to a 1-yr deal with the Yankees, pending a physical. Park will pitch out of the bullpen. One cannot help but wonder whether this means that if Joba beats out Hughes for the five spot, Hughes will be sent to AAA.

WE FULFILLED OUR ASIAN QUOTA!!!!
I'm not crazy about the move, I think it's a little too much money, but more arms isn't a bad thing.
I like the move. You can never have too much bullpen depth and Park is a guy who has been effective out of the bullpen, including in the playoffs.
That said, and while I acknowledge it may be too early in Spring to assume this, considering that the Yankees have no more spots left on the 40 man (necessitating a call down of one of their major leaguers, of whom only Joba, Hughes, and Ace have options), I think this signing means the Yankees have decided that Joba will be on the roster as either a starter or reliever, and Hughes will spend (at least part) of this year in AAA getting ready for full-fledged service next year.
I think sending Hughes down hurts the bullpen this season, but it is probably the best thing for his career potential, aside form winning a rotation spot, which would stunt Joba's development as a starter. They both need to innings, preferably as starters and that seems more important than the quality of the opposing hitters.
Hughes can also work on his other pitches and on location in AAA. He has so much upside that I think its important to stay optimistic.
I also think that the Yankees signed CHP so CC (holy crap, Proctor sighting!) and Andy could make fun of him to his face because they both have home runs off of him.
Sorry about that last spammer guys.
Yeah, I suspect that, if Hughes does end up back in AAA, it is exactly for the reasons you outlined, Jon. He needs innings and he'll get them there.
I too hit a home run of CHP once. It still makes him cry at night.
I look forward to hearing the interesting names that fans will call him.
Hey there everyone, I actually sat down and interviewed Derek this past Saturday, check it out on my blog for some interesting info. Maybe a few things you haven't heard him say before too.
