Panicking Now Appropriate

The Good

Cano had a monster game going 4-5 last night, and Cervelli drove in a pair of runs going 1-3 with a double. Beyond that, there wasn't too much good about yesterday's game.

The Bad

AJ Burnett remembered how fun it was last season when he was the most inconsistant pitcher in our rotation. He decided to recreate that. If a 6 run deficit wasn't enough, Boone Logan and Mark Melancon combined for 4 additional runs in just 2.1 innings of work. 10 runs allowed by our pitching staff last night!

The Ugly

It looks like Posada's day-to-day foot bruise is actually a 3-4 week broken foot. Cervelli's been pretty magical thus far into the season, but losing Posada for a month is certainly not going to help the team.

Oh, and Mark Teixeira still sucks.

Respect Jeters Gangster is for the Children

The RJG is commited to donating $2 for every homerun hit this season to the Children's Health Fund. For information about the Children's Health Fund and the Yankees Homerun Club, please look at the links provided at the top right hand corner of this page.

Last night A-Rod hit a homerun. It was pretty awesome.

Posada 6hr = $12
Granderson 2hr = $4
Cano 9hr = $18
Swisher 7hr = $14
Jeter 4hr = $8
Johnson 2hr = $4
Rodriguez 6hr = $12
Teixeira 7hr = $14
Thames 2hr = $4
Gardner 2hr = $4
Winn 1hr = $2
Miranda 1hr = $2
Total = $98

I hate to be inappropriate, so I thank you for letting me know I can panic now. This are officially looking not so good.

I am glad that I didn't get to actually watch the game last night. It was painful enough checking the score on my phone.

Spraining your ankle tripping over your own bat? We're really getting creative with our injuries now.

Once again, It's in Pettitte's hands to right the ship.

I demand an Ugly Update. Marcus Markley Thames spraining his ankle by stepping on his own bat (forcing Pena to play RF) definitely belongs in The Ugly.

Posada going on the DL is pretty bad, but the upside is we have a roster spot for another catcher now. I have no idea what would have happened if Cervelli got hurt last night. The entire bench situation is unsettling.

The upside to Logan's awful performance is that he might have finally convinced Girardi not to use him like a shut down lefty specialist anymore. Logan allows baserunners like it's going out of style (his WHIP is up to 1.966) and he's bad against both righties and lefties. There's no reason to think this year's performance is a fluke as he's never been any good. If a game is winnable (and last night's game was winnable when Logan came in) and Girardi wants a lefty, he has to go to Marte. Logan should be DFA'd.

I hoped that Melancon's performance would be a silver lining, but it turned out to be more dark cloud.

The team has built up a great record in the early going and is still ahead of Boston. We have to hope that right now the team is the weakest it will be all year (no Posada, Swisher or Aceves, Jeter and Teixeira slumping, and no one really pitching reliably out of the pen). The Rays have to come down to earth a bit after a very easy schedule, and the Jays are not for real. So it's not panic time yet.

The only thing really panic worthy is the number of injuries, and more specifically, Posada's injury. Our lineup yesterday was half way comprised of bench players. And that against our toughest division opponent. Not cool! But even then we scored 6 runs, and that should typically be enough to win most games. Burnett is really the reason we lost last night. You can't give up 6 runs in a start and expect your team to win.

No, it is not appropriate to panic. We are the New York Yankees. Let fans of that other team panic. This team has shown that it has what it takes to win the World Series -- after all, it already has.

Be concerned, certainly. Be scared, never. Make changes to solidify the roster, absolutely. Panic, not on your life. Just remember, there are 28 other teams that would love to have our problems and no worse, if they could also have our record.

True Uncle Mike. Frankly, I don't think this is going to impact our post season chances. If anything I'd rather this happen in May/early June than in August/early September. Hopefully, it won't happen in both.

The injuries worry me a lot more than anything else. I don't know which of the Alejandros writes these, but as Fernando just said, better now than August/September.

Oh, and I don't believe ANYONE that's like "but the entire time in 2009 I knew they were going to win!" Bullshit. The team didn't really come together until the ASB. Everyone jumped ship after that awful Nationals series.

That said, when everyone gets healthy and we have an easier schedule, WE'RE GOING BEASTING.

I'd just like to point out that Tim Kurkjian compared this year's Rays to the '98 yankees. A little early, no?

I'm not going to panic, if only because I'm basically a boring person. AJ getting bombed by a team he's dominated all his life could just be the coming around of what goes around. No fun, but it happened.
Granderson is almsot back, Swisher may just be back. ARod looks like he might have found his power stroke again, and feel like doing some stat padding to further ruin The Game. (Joge is a tragedy, though.)
If Joba and especially Mo blow another one, I may just be pushed over to panic mode, though.

Joe
(Anybody else go jumping up and down when Pena stood there staring at those two huge fat ducks? worked out, though.)

Also if we lose any games while Jorge is on the DL I'm blaming that guy who said we won with Cervelli and didn't win with Posada.
