Bob Sheppard Passes Away

It was announced this weekend that legendary Yankees announcer Bob Sheppard passed away. His voice graced Yankee stadium for decades, calling names from Mickey Mantle all the way to Derek Jeter. Sheppard worked well into his 90's at the stadium, and passed at the age of 99. Hearing his voice calling the names of baseball's greatest players over the years has been a real treat. He will be missed.

a good friend of mine got married 6 years ago. He had sent a script to Mr. Sheppard and had a tape made. When all the guest were seated and waiting for the bridial party they heard Bob Sheppard's voice say, "Good afternoon and welcome to...." the jaws of every guy in the room hit the floor as we were introduced by Mr Sheppard

That is an amazing story! That was such a great idea for a wedding.

Dylan, thats true. It'll be cool to continue to hear him say "Derek Jeter" at the stadium. Especially the way that Sheppard says it.

Derek ... JE-tah ... number 2 ...

My best Sheppard memory is from going to Orlando Hernandez's Yankee debut. People were really fired up about Orlando and eager to see him pitch. Sheppard introduced him as "Orlando ... El Duque ..." and the "Hernandez" was drowned out by the crowd cheering.

I went to a game after Sheppard stopped announcing and his replacement made two or three noticeable mistakes. I don't remember what they were exactly, but he pronounced at least one Yankee's name wrong. I realized I had never heard Sheppard botch a name. He was the best at what he did, much like Wolverine.

But unlike Wolverine, Sheppard's bones were not made of adamantium, however his voice was made of purely refined gold.
